With the quarterfinals having begun, the true title contenders are being separated from the title pretenders.
This has brought with it action galore as fans were yet again left on the edge of their seats on Friday.
In spite of all the excitement on the field, only two would earn the right to be recognised as our KFC Moments of the Day.
KFC Moment 1
Action, action and more action. That’s exactly what the last eight clash between two powerhouses of global football in Belgium and Brazil brought to the table. While Belgium may have a star-studded squad, not many would have predicted the way that the game went.
Only minutes into the game, and it was apparent that it was the Kevin De Bruyne show. The attacker showed just why he is regarded as one of the world’s best technicians, and was duly rewarded for his efforts just after the half-hour mark.
With Belgium one goal to the good already, the 27-year-old scored what turned out to be the decisive goal, and what a stunner it was.
Following an impressive counter-attacking move, the ball fell to the feet of De Bruyne on the edge of the area, and without even thinking twice he unleashed a right-footed pile driver that rattled the back of the net.
The goal not only left a despairing Allisson Becker in the Brazil goal stunned, but saw Brazilian fans in disbelief as they watched their tournament hopes dissipate in front of them.
KFC Moment 2
Sometimes, standout moments are not always to do with a moment of brilliance on the field. While it’s easy for a player to lose himself in the moment when scoring a goal, a player who shows a gesture of respect, that has to be admired.
Antoine Griezmann, who has been a star of France’s campaign thus far, found the back of the net in bizarre circumstances. The exciting playmaker sent a rather tame effort the way of Uruguayan goalkeeper Fernando Muslera, who completely fluffed his lines, doubling France’s advantage.
The goal though, might not have been the most memorable or outstanding but what the 27-year-old did next will forever live in the hearts of many. Griezmann refused to celebrate the goal out of respect for the Uruguayan’s who had in their side two of his Atletico Madrid teammates.
Jose Gimenez and Diego Godin have seemingly left an indelible mark on Griezmann and his reaction after the goal showed just that, as he refused to celebrate such an important goal for his nation.
