Amakhosi go in search of three points as they look to keep up their chase for PSL glory

After the high of this weekend’s triumph over SuperSport United in the Telkom Knockout, Kaizer Chiefs will hope to get their Premier Soccer League (PSL) campaign back on track with victory over Black Leopards.

While Amakhosi have been impressing in the Cup, Chiefs’ form in the league has certainly seen a decline as they are winless in their last three games in all competition.

Chiefs will be desperate for victory as not only will it give them an opportunity to keep up with the PSL pacesetters, but will see them get over the defeat to Orlando Pirates which would have certainly hurt.

Nonetheless, with so much at stake for Chiefs they will be wary of the opposition.  The Limpopo-based outfit have showed time and time again that they are not just here to make up the numbers but to compete. This showed recently in the Cup as they took the Soweto giants all the way to penalties before finally relenting.

Chiefs will be aware of the dangers that they pose, and although Leopards have won just one of their last five games in all competitions they cannot be underestimated.

Squads & Team News

Meanwhile, Chiefs have been one of the league’s most free flowing teams having netted 14 goals in just 11 games, and this is primarily down to the work of star attacker Khama Billiat. The Zimbabwe international has adjusted to life at Naturena rather quickly and is currently the club’s top scorer with four goals.

Billiat is likely to be one of the first names on the team sheet alongside the likes of Leonardo Castro and Dumisani Zuma.

Another name that would certainly have been given the vote of confidence following his exploits on the weekend is Ramahlwe Mphahlele. The full-back netted a sublime goal against Matsatsantsa and has two goals two his credit this season.

With Lebogang Manyama still out injured, this added attacking prowess should come in handy especially against a side who have conceded 13 goals in nine games.

On the other hand, Chiefs need to be watchful of Leopards’ pace upfront. With players such as Mwape Musonda and Joseph Mhlongo among others in attack, the Glamour Boys cannot afford to take their eyes off the ball.

On the plus side for Leopards, after exiting the TKO at the hands of Chiefs, the break may have been welcomed. Leopards’ mentor Joel Masutha has had ample time to work on his selection and tactics, while Chiefs head into the game on the back of a positive but energy sapping game in Durban.

Match Preview

Heading into the clash, Chiefs are overwhelming favourites on paper.

There have been 17 previous meetings between the two sides with Leopards winning just four and Chiefs 10. The last time Leopards were victorious was in a Cup game dating back to 2015 where they edged out Chiefs 2-1.

However, their last win against Chiefs in the PSL goes back to 2012, which could see Lidoda Duvha eager to upset the applecart.
