- Mayo enjoyed a stellar season with CT City
- Chiefs and Downs are reportedly after him
- City have now tied him down to a new deal
WHAT HAPPENED? Mayo has just completed a stellar season in which he scored 12 goals and finished as the Premier Soccer League joint-top goal-scorer with Mamelodi Sundowns forward Peter Shalulile. He was duly named City's Player of the Season in his second term playing top-flight football.
It is also a term he broke into the Bafana Bafana squad as Hugo Broos recognised his scoring exploits. With his profile rising, Kaizer Chiefs, Young Africans and Mamelodi Sundowns are reportedly circling themselves around the 24-year-old.
But the Citizens have moved in to extend his contract by fives years and they made it official on Tuesday.
WHAT WAS SAID: “Cape Town City is delighted to confirm that Khanyisa Mayo has signed a new long-term contract with the Citizens," announced City.
THE BIGGER PICTURE: After Mayo extended his City contract, his suitors will have to dig deep to win his signature. If Chiefs are serious about the Bafana star, it is to be seen if they are willing to pay a huge transfer figure for the striker City are reluctant to lose.
Sundowns are known not to hesitate parting ways with enormous sums of money for players. That could see them having an edge over Chiefs in their pursuit of the Mayo. Yanga have also emerged as a club that has been investing a lot of money in building their squad.
WHAT NEXT FOR MAYO? The Bafana Bafana forward goes for the off-season break on a high after enjoying what could be the best season in his professional career so far.
