Kaitano Tembo backs Ronwen Williams to replace Itumeleng Khune for Bafana Bafana v Libya showdown

SuperSport United head coach Kaitano Tembo believes that Ronwen Williams deserves to start for Bafana Bafana against Libya next month.

However, Tembo said that he does not want to interfere with Stuart Baxter's plans for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifier.

"I would like to emphasize that if he is given the opportunity, I think he would be ready. At the same time, we have to give the national team head coach some space," Tembo told SABCSport.

Bafana need to avoid defeat in order to qualify for the Afcon finals having failed to reach the last tournament which was hosted by Gabon in 2017.

"For him to select the squad with his technical team that is key because Bafana Bafana are heading into a very important game against Libya in the 2019 Afcon qualifiers," he continued.

Baxter is expected to choose between Williams and Bidvest Wits shot-stopper Darren Keet, who both have been in the Bafana set-up over the years.

Tembo, who worked with Baxter at SuperSport, explained that whoever starts in goal for Bafana should be supported.

"I don't want to put pressure on the coach by throwing around names of players. It is not fair on the coach. He needs some space to do his job properly without any hindrance," he explained.

"He needs to do it with a very clear mind. All we can do is to try to support whoever he selects to play because they are all Bafana Bafana players," he added.

"They need the support of everyone for the team to do well," the former Zimbabwe international concluded.

Williams, 27, in all the league 21 matches for Matsatsantsa and conceded 20 goals in the process.
