‘Jean-Philippe Gbamin will stay!’ - Mainz 05 reject record bid for Ivorian defender

According to the club’s sporting director, the Cote d’Ivoire defender is not for sale

Mainz 05 have no intention of selling Jean-Philippe Gbamin despite confirming a record offer, says sporting director Rouven Schroeder.

The bid is believed to eclipse the €26 million received from Borussia Dortmund for Abdou Diallo earlier this summer, and it is reported to have come from an English Premier League outfit.

The O-fivers, however, are keen on entering the 2018-19 campaign with their prized asset.

"The good thing is we already received an extraordinary offer, but we turned it down," Schroeder told Bild.

"Jean-Philippe will stay. Jean-Philippe is not on the market.

The Cote d’Ivoire international joined the Bundesliga side from Lens in 2016, and has featured in 55 league appearances across two seasons.

According to reports, Arsenal are linked to the 22-year-old defender.
