I-League: East Bengal’s Trevor Morgan on Bengaluru FC clash: On paper it’s the toughest

The English coach wants his team to improve as they gear up to face the reigning champions on Sunday…

East Bengal trail Bengaluru FC by two points going into the round four of I-League. On Sunday, they have a chance to nudge ahead if they manage to pick a win at the Barasat Stadium against the Blues.

The Red and Gold brigade have suffered defeats against the Bangalore-based team in their last three duels and coach Trevor Morgan will look to put an end to that run.

“It's very important to win. We didn't make the best of starts which made the two away wins really important. Seven points from three games is okay.

“Tomorrow's game is a challenge for us and it's probably going to be a challenge for the opposition as well. They've had three home games to start with and won them comfortably but hopefully we'll them a stronger test tomorrow. The same will happen to us because they are a good side,” said Morgan.

The former Dempo SC coach warned his side to be cautious when defending set-pieces as the Blues are several players who carry an aerial threat.

“They are a squad who have been together for quite a while and know their system. So it will be a good test for us. We'll have to be very aware of what their threats are from corners and free-kicks while trying to make ours work as well,” he mentioned.

Interestingly, Morgan billed the clash against Bengaluru FC and not Mohun Bagan as the toughest.

“On paper, yes (toughest game), but there are no easy games in this league. We are now playing a team who are above us. It can be as tough as we make or it can be as good as we can make it. It depends on our performance.

“I could never sit here and say I'm happy about that (last two wins). We moan quite a lot as coaches we are never satisfied because we always feel that we can improve. We have to sometimes pick the little bits that go wrong because those little bits can add on to a big thing later on,” he shared his thoughts.

Morgan mentioned that Abinash Ruidas will not be part of the squad on Sunday.

“We miss only Bikash (Jairu) through injury. Abinash (Ruidas) wasn't in the 20 players who were to train. David (Lalrinmuana) has a family matter that he's attending to,” he signed off.
