Former Kaizer Chiefs striker Gert Schalkwyk believes coach Ernst Middendorp can bring trophies to Naturena.
Schalkwyk, who played under the German mentor for the Soweto giants also says Shaun Bartlett’s availability on the bench as an assistant coach will definitely benefit the team.
“Ernst is trying something different, the style they play is different, Shaun was playing for Chiefs and he knows how to move the players around, so if they don’t win anything this season next season they will be strong,” Schalkwyk told Phakaaathi.
Speaking of his career at Chiefs, the former Maritzburg United forward says having experienced players such as the late John Moshoeu at Amakhosi was key for the club’s success.
“When we were playing we had a lot of experienced guys, we had John (Moshoeu), (Fabian) McCarthy and (Cyril) Nzama,” he continued.

Despite struggling to find the back of the net in Port Elizabeth on Sunday against Minnows Magic FC, Chiefs eventually managed to score three goals in order to secure a 3-0 win, but their has admitted concern regarding their failure to bury their chances.
“From the defence to the strikers we had an experienced player in every position to manage the two or three youngsters starting next to them on that day,” reflected the 36-year-old.
“That time we had guys who wanted to win every game. We even won at training when it was XI versus XI. The experienced players told us ‘you must win, we need this trophy’,” he concluded.
Moreover, Chiefs have joined the likes of Golden Arrows, Chippa United, TS Galaxy, Cape Umoya United, Cape Town City and Bloemfontein Celtic in the next stage of the cup competition.
