David Kannemeyer: Kaizer Chiefs must beat SuperSport United

Former Kaizer Chiefs defender David Kannemeyer says Amakhosi players must step up to the plate and win their Telkom Knockout match against SuperSport United.

The former left-back believes Chiefs have to prepare their mindset for a tough encounter against the Tshwane giants on Sunday afternoon at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.

“No, Chiefs is a big brand and they have firepower to win this one. This is the one for them, but they must step up their game and ensure they win," Kannemeyer told Goal.

“They have to go and win the game, they have no excuse and it's very important to bounce back after their loss to (Orlando) Pirates in the Soweto Derby," he said.

“However, they must be at their best and they are aware that SuperSport are very good in cup games and are looking for a win...it will be a special game to watch," he explained.

Speaking about the pressure on coach Giovanni Solinas' shoulders, the former defender lamented the fact that South Africans are always looking to blame the coach and not the players.

“I think the South Africans must not always look at the coach and try to look at the players as well because it takes the whole team to lose or win," he noted.

“He has done a good job so far and the media as well must change that mindset...he must take the credit for winning three matches in September, why do people forget that?," he quizzed.

“I was happy when (Itumeleng) Khune mentioned that players must also step up stand up for the coach," said the retired player.

When asked about the Soweto giants' record against SuperSport of not having bagged a win over coach Kaitano Tembo's side since March 2016, the Cape Town-born legend said it is all up in the mind.

“I think it's just the mindset and that is why they always lose to SuperSport, Chiefs must get back to winning ways and we can't always blame the coach in South African football," he continued.

"I remember when we won so many trophies during the 'Vat Alles' days, we never complained and I dream that Chiefs will return to those days – they must win this Cup,” he concluded.
