In this series termed 'Lions Abroad', we take a look at some of Singapore's footballing stars who ply their trade overseas

Baihakki Khaizan is such a familiar face in Singapore. After all this is a man who has 129 international caps for Singapore.

A three time AFF Suzuki Cup winner the centre-back played for Warriors FC in the 2017 Singapore Premier League campaign but following the end of the season, he was not offered a contract. A trial with Saudi Arabian second-tier side Jeddah Club soon followed after but nothing concrete materialised.

Subsequently, the lanky defender was offered a contract with Malaysian Super League side Kuala Lumpur FA. But a last minute offer to play for a Thai team came in and it was not long before he signed with four-time Thai League 1 winner, Muangthong United.

He would soon rub shoulders with the likes of (Charyl) Chappuis and Sarach (Yooyen). However it wasn’t long before the 34-year-old was loaned out to Udon Thani who won promotion to the second division least season, after winning a third place play-off.

The club and Muangthong share a close working relationship with several Muangthong players currently out on loan at Udon Thani. In fact, both clubs’ training pitches are located next to each other.

Baihakki won’t be alone however as fellow Singaporeans Hasan Sunny and Izwan Mahbud are also featuring in the Thai League 2.

Baihakki played the full 90 minutes for Udon Thani FC in their two recent league matches against Chiang Mai FC and Khon Kaen. The former match was a 2-2 draw while the latter match recorded a 1-0 loss to Udon Thani.
