Asante Kotoko continued their home dominance on Wednesday after defeating Wafa 1-0 in matchday seven of the Ghana Premier League at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.
Kotoko coach Zdravko Lugarusic made three changes to the side that shared the spoils 1-1 with Bolga All Stars. Edwin Tuffour Frimpong, Seth Opare and Obed Owusu were all missing but captain Amos Frimpong returned from the injury which made him miss five games. Ghana defender Awal Mohammed was handed his debut game and Ashittey Ollenu returned from illness.
Wafa made only one change in their side that defeated Tema Youth on Sunday. Majeed Ashimeru missed the game due to accumulated cards.
Kotoko goalkeeper Felix Annan, facing his old club, was forced to palm away Komla Agbenadian's goal-bound shot very early in the meeting as the visitors pushed for the opener.
Annan, so often Wafa's saviour throughout his glittering period in Sogakope before his switch to Kumasi three seasons ago, had to organise his defence on numerous occasions to stop Richard Lamptey and Agbenadian by the 43rd minute.
Ollenu had Kotoko's best opportunity on the stroke of first-half, coming one-on-one with goalkeeper Razak Abalora, but he couldn't beat the onrushing goalkeeper.
After the break, Lugarusic brought on Frank Sarfo-Gyamfi for Abeiku Ainooson and the hosts took charge of the midfield, causing multiple troubles to the visitors' defence.
Yakubu Mohammed had a couple of chances but fluffed them to the frustrations of the home fans.
Awal made way for Baba Mahama on 57th minute and the former Techiman City star almost found the opener with his first touch.
Four minutes later, Kotoko finally had the breakthrough. Sarfo-Gyamfi rose above his marker and headed home Eric Donkor's corner to open the scoring for the Porcupines.
On 80th minute, Mahama almost made it 2-0 after connecting with Emmanuel Gyamfi's pass but his effort was thwarted by Caleb Amankwaah. Gyamfi later created another chance for Sarfo-Gyamfi but the latter lost his footing, with the hosts holding on to a lone-goal win.
Kotoko are now second on the log, tied 17 points with leaders Aduana Stars while Wafa have moved one place down to tenth with nine points.
Kotoko will travel to Accra to face Hearts of Oak in the Super Clash on Sunday.
