Despite being recently added to Al Ahly’s squad for the new season, South Africa international Phakamani Mahlambi looks set to depart.

Speculation has been rife that the 20-year-old could be headed back to South Africa ever since it was initially believed that Mahlambi would not be registered for the new season, due to Al Ahly having filled their foreign quota.

However, following an injury to Junior Ajayi, Mahlambi was back in the picture at the Egyptians giants, only for reports to later emerge that he has handed in a transfer request.

Mahlambi joined Al Ahly from Bidvest Wits towards the end of 2017 but has struggled to cement his place in the first team.

Mamelodi Sundowns are reportedly keen on bringing the attacker on board as they look to replace talisman Percy Tau, who has since joined English Premier League outfit Brighton & Hove Albion.

The fire has perhaps been fuelled even further after the player was recently fined for missing training and has not featured for Patrice Carteron’s side.

Nonetheless, Al Ahly’s director of transfers Mohamed Fadl has confirmed that the club will sell the player if a suitable offer is made.

“We have signed Phakamani Mahlambi for €1.3 million, but we might sell him for around €2 million because we see him as a very good player,” Fadl said according to KingFut.

“He is a big player and plays for the South African national team, but we have very special foreign players, and that’s why he is currently in this situation,” he added.

“Phakamani doesn’t want to continue with Al Ahly and we have got approval from Patrice Carteron to sell him. We can’t force him to stay,” he explained.

“But we can’t buy Phakamani for €1.3 million and then sell him for only €500,000,” he concluded.
