All the stats and numbers you need as Atlas Lions prepare to take on the Elephants in Oyem

Our good friends at Opta have complied all the numbers and stats you need to assess the teams’ chances ahead of today’s Afcon Group C clash at  Stade d'Oyem.

-   This is Morocco’s 16th AFCON participation. Their only title dates back to 1976, when they beat DR Congo (Zaire as they were then called) in the group stages (1-0).

-   Morocco have failed to make it out of the group stages in six of their last seven AFCON participations, the only exception coming in 2004 when they were beaten finalists against Tunisia.

-   Ivory Coast are the defending champions, having won the AFCON in 2015; it was their second title after 1992. The last team to win back-to-back titles were Egypt (3 in a row from 2006 to 2010).

-   This is Ivory Coast’s 22nd AFCON participation, a tally only bettered by Egypt (23).

-   Ivory Coast are unbeaten against Morocco at the AFCON (W2 D1). Their last meeting in the competition was in the 2006 group stages, with Ivory Coast winning 1-0 thanks to a Didier Drogba penalty.

-   In fact, Morocco’s last victory against Ivory Coast dates back to November 1994, in an AFCON qualifier (1-0). Since then, they’ve won none of their six encounters (D2 L4).

-   This is Hervé Renard’s fifth AFCON as manager – he’s only lost two of his 21 games in the competition (W9 D10 L2 – excl. penalties). The Morocco boss is the only one to have won the tournament with two different teams (Zambia in 2012, Ivory Coast in 2015).

-   This is Michel Dussuyer’s fifth AFCON tournament as manager. The Ivory Coast boss has never progressed further than the quarter-finals (2004 and 2015, both with Guinea).

-   Following his goal on MD2 against DR Congo, Wilfried Bony has now scored in four different editions of AFCON (2012, 2013, 2015 and 2017). He has had a hand in five goals in his last five appearances in this competition (three goals, two assists).

-   Ivory Coast must win this match in order to qualify for the knockout stages. They have qualified for the knockout stages in each of the last six editions of the tournament and last got knocked out at the Group Stage in 2002.
