In the first leg of their tie last Tuesday, the Thai side began really well and led at half-time, thanks to good work from their captain Teerasil Dangda who was brilliant throughout. It seemed as if Muangthong United would stage a victory going into the second leg when they came up with an enterprising outing in the first half.
The opening goal eluded them until the 45th minute and it was Dangda who provided the finish. He did superbly to receive Theeraton Bunmathan’s ball which was dummied by Chanathip Songkrasin from 20 yards out and find the bottom corner of the net with an accurate strike.
That superlative effort, however, would not be enough as the Japanese side hit back with vengeance in the second half and claimed a 3-1 win to take home before the second leg.
But Teerasil Dangda's performance on the day was very impressive and the way he led his team's attack was commendable. He had 47 touches of the ball and orchestrated the majority of Muangthong's attacks and ended up with a passing accuracy of 92%.
He also had an interception to his name, coming up with a complete performance that has seen him named as the Toyota Asian Player of the Week. Well deserved!
