Orlando Pirates defender Sangweni retires from professional football

Sangweni won the hearts of many whilst at Golden Arrows, but it is at Pirates where he became a household name alongside the likes of Lucky Lekgwathi and Rooi Mahamutsa

Orlando Pirates defender Siyabonga Sangweni has announced his retirement from professional football with immediate effect, club chairman Dr Irvin Khoza confirmed on Thursday morning.

According to Khoza, Sangweni decided to end his playing career pre-maturely because of injuries after being advised by the medical team to stop playing at the highest level.

The 34-year-old Empangeni-born star spent five years with the Buccaneers after he was signed from Golden Arrows in 2011.

It's not clear at this stage whether or not Sangweni will remain part of the Pirates' team, but according to Dr Khoza, the player has decided to go home and "complete his work there".
