Lyon’s Samuel Umtiti snubs Cameroon

The 21-year-old defender says he wants to join the France national team and not the Indomitable Lions

French side Lyon's defender Samuel Umtiti has once more turned his back on Cameroonian officials after they tried to persuade him to join the Indomitable Lions for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations in Equatorial Guinea.

The 21-year-old centre back said he was aiming to play for France and not Cameroon, where he was born.

“My position has not changed. I began my career with France’s youth team and so it is logical that I continue to the senior team,” Umtiti said at a press conference in Lyon on Thursday.

“There is huge competition for my post within the France team and I believe this will motivate me to work harder,” he said.

The Cameroon football federation has approached the player more than once in a bid to strengthen the Lions’ back half.

Umtiti has represented France in the junior categories, but is yet to win a cap with the senior team.

Cameroon are pitted against Cote D’Ivoire, Mali and Guinea in an all-Francophone Group D, to be based in Malabo.
