Brondby rejected South Africa's Olympic call-up for Phiri

South African Under-23 international Lebogang Phiri had his call-up to Owen Da Gama’s Rio Olympics squad rejected by his club Brondby IF

The 21-year-old was a notable absentee alongside Bafana Bafana midfielder Andile Jali, who was expected to fill the third spot for the three senior players that are allowed by all participating teams, when Owen Da Gama announce his 22-men squad for the specticle in August.

Itumeleng Khune and Eric Mathoho occupy the other two.

Like Phiri, Jali’s Belgian side, KV Oostende, also turned down his call-up because the Olympic Games are not played on dates designated by FIFA for international matches and this qualified KV Oostende and Brondby to turn down the call-ups.

“The director of sport at the club rejected my call up because of the clubs involvement in the Uefa Cup,” a dejected Phiri told Goal.

“But it is alright, I can only take it as a positive and move on.”

Phiri made a lasting impression to all the South Africans who had been daring to see him in action during Bafana recent Cosafa Cup triumph.
