Commentary

FULL TIME; SYDNEY FC 1, WESTERN SYDNEY WANDERERS 0 - It's all over at the SCG and Sydney FC have their derby revenge as a powerhouse and invigorating second half showing sees them finish with too much in reserve for the Wanderers. Able to contain what little threat Western Sydney conjured up, Sydney FC were able to control the tempo and march forward almost at will in a clinical showing. With Bobo netting for the hosts in the 60th minute, it was simply a case of shoring up their defences as the Sky Blues negated anything that the Wanderers could create. The Sky Blues increase their chances of finishing in the Top 4 with a convincing 1-0 victory.
89' SAVED - Where's this play been all game as the Sky Blues now conjure up a lightning-quick counter which leaves Wanderers defences trailing. With Caceres and Barbarouses all pivotal in the build up, the final ball is all Ninkovic's as his low volley is kept out of the bottom left corner by Margush from six yards. Fasntastic.

87' SUBSTITUTION WANDERERS - Ugarkovic OFF
86' SAVED - Perhaps the best moment of the game for Western Sydney as Ibini's speed carries him towards the left side of the box. Knowing the power he possesses, Ibini cranks out a venomous low volley which is on-track for the bottom left corner except for some incredible goal-keeping from Redmayne.

81' Ambitious stuff from the Wanderers as Troisi latches onto a long through ball and closes in on goal. Offloading from the left corner of the area, Redmayne is vigilant as the shot carries power, conviction but sadly, no accuracy. Western Sydney are trying but it's simply not good enough.
79' It's Kamau and Natta linking up as the Wanderers chase this game, trying desperately to find the leveller. With the Sky Blues defences marshalled well by Wilkinson and and McGowan though, the final pass in towards the penalty area is intercepted and enables Sydney to clear.

77' SUBSTITUTION SYDNEY FC - Retre ON
Substitution
76' SUBSTITUTION SYDNEY FC - Brattan OFF
74' The closest that the Wanderers have been as their free-kick is set up on the right edge of the box. With Troisi wanting the chance at glory, he sends his kick up and over the wall but evidently two metres over the crossbar. Redmayne watched it the entire way too.
72' This looks a little comical but it's anything but that as Kamau burns down the right in pursuit of the ball. With McGowan crossing paths, he lurches for the ball and ends up tipping Kamau vertically. Kamau lands fine on the edge of the area but Referee Beath is assured it's a bad foul in any case.
Yellow Card
70' YELLOW CARD SYDNEY FC! (Ryan McGowan).
68' Ibini looks to inject some spark into the Wanderers attack as he receives under pressure 40 yards out. Able to turn, his intended ball for Russell is picked out by Wilkinson who sets the Sky Blues counter attack in motion.

64' SUBSTITUTION WANDERERS - Duke OFF
62' Gordon now sees himself set free down the right for the Wanderers as he's the only option presenting. Uncertain whether to lay in a cross or continue his run, King comes in late and pinches the ball 35 yards out. Terrific urgent defending from the hosts.
60' Sublime movement from the Sky Blues as King gets himself into position down the right channel. Working a ball into the area, it's Ninkovic who seizes on it and holds play up. With Bobo presenting through the middle, Ninkovic times his cross perfectly and Bobo expertly heads the ball into the bottom right corner.
Goal
58' GOAL SYDNEY FC! (Bobo). SYDNEY FC 1, WESTERN SYDNEY WANDERERS 0.
56' CHANCE - An open header presents itself the Sky Blues as their early dominance in the second half sees them winning another corner. With the delivery bang on the money, it falls for Bobo who rises up but steers his header wide of the mark from almost point blank range.
54' Another small chance for Sydney FC as their most recently won corner is brought in from the left. With a series of headpasses not troubling Margush, Le Fondre charges in and chests it down. At speed though, he can't pull up to turn it towards home from the byline.
52' Neat build-up from the Sky Blues as Barbarouses tees up Grant in the right channel. With Grant taking a second to decide whether he wants to attack or lay in a low cross, the latter is eventually chosen and deflected out by Natta. Good pressure from the hosts.
50' SAVED - INCREDIBLE goalkeeping from Margush keeps this one at zeroes as Sydney FC are awarded the free kick for a trip on Le Fondre. With Brattan standing over the effort, his delivery is a powerful, curling strike from the top of the area and forces Margush into an acrobatic one-handed save. Remarkable.
48' Underway in the second half..
HALF TIME; SYDNEY FC 0, WESTERN SYDNEY WANDERERS 0  - Well that's the first half done at the SCG and we've got yet another tight tussle looming between these two as we reach the interval deadlocked. With both teams having goals chalked for indiscretions inside the penalty area, they'll both be hell bent on making the second half as productive (if not more), than the first. A pulsating Sydney derby has us at 0-0 with all to play for in the second stanza.
45' + 2' One of the most questionable yellow cards you'll see as Brattan tries to chase the ball down at the byline. With Dorrans stepping across to shield it, there's a soft tangle of bodies as the players go shoulder to shoulder. Referee Beath sees it as a yellow somehow. Wow.
Yellow Card
45' + 1' YELLOW CARD SYDNEY FC! (Luke Brattan).
45' A fantastic corner variant is denied as the Wanderers work it short down the byline. With the ball then angled back to Kamau, he slams the ball home unopposed from eight yards out. The ease in which the goal was scored is scrutinised however and chalked off as Gordon had blocked Ninkovic unnecessarily.
43' VAR REVIEW - GOAL OVERTUNED - WESTERN SYDNEY WANDERERS.
41' Duke and Troisi try and combine slickly as the Wanderers play it patiently through the middle in a bid to find their desired formation. With players set, Troisi fires a straight ball to Duke and continues his run however by the time he'd reached 40 yards out, Sky Blues defenders had closed in to cramp the room.
39' CHANCE - End to end from the Wanderers now as Kamau chimes in with a nice passage down the left channel. Trickling in a low ball into the path of Aquilina, the latter fires a low drive which Redmayne spreads to cover from six yards. Offside flag comes up late in any case.
37' CHANCE - This one's opening up in the latter stages as Sydney FC's corner is turned in from the left. With Grant well positioned at the near post, he throws himself off-balance in a bid to complete a bicycle kick and almost dribbles it home. Referee Beath chalks the effort off in any case for a high boot.
35' SAVED - Margush with a stunning effort to deny the Sky Blues as Caceres is pleaded to shoot from the top of the box. Weaving past opponents, he works the ball onto his right and cannons a dangerous looking volley towards goal which Margush tips clear to his right. Great 'keeping, great reflexes.
34' There can be no denying that this wasn't a card as Gordon pursues Ninkovic and slides in very, very late once the ball had gone. To be honest, you've seen these given straight reds before as Sydney FC players go over to remonstrate. Gordon's a very lucky boy to be on the park.
Yellow Card
33' YELLOW CARD WANDERERS! (Ziggy Gordon).
31' Lovely work from Grant as he doesn't give up in his pursuit of a ball down the right. Fighting hard to win possession, he tries to then conjure up a one-two with Barbarouses however the back heel from the latter is misguided, killing the foray dead.
29' CHANCE - Western Sydney look to be targeting Duke which would come as no surprise. With a ball whipped in from the right channel, Duke sees the ball fall at his feet but is flanked quickly, managing only a pretty tame low-drive on goal which Redmayne collects.
27' Sydney FC fans go up as one as Bobo prods the ball into the back of the net after a Sydney FC corner. With players starting to celebrate, the effort gets a massive head-shake from the referee who has seen Grant foul Duke in the build up.
25' VAR REVIEW - SYDNEY FC - NO GOAL!
22' A free kick now for the Sky Blues who set up 40 yards from home and look to turn it into something meaningful. Set up well inside their penalty area, the shot from Brattan is honest but ultimately off-line as Margush has it covered and watches it over his crossbar.
20' An unlikely attacking outlet for the Wanderers as they head through the middle where the final through ball finds Ugarkovic. With Grant and King for company, Ugarkovic can't do much in terms of turning to craft a shot on goal as he's shut down expertly well before Redmayne assists by picking up the loose scraps.
18' Western Sydney go looking for Troisi once again as a lofted through ball is chested down. Trying to turn to play the ball down the right channel, it's McGowan who senses where the foray is going and duly, he steps over to break the effort up. Western Sydney slowly starting to find their feet here.
16' CHANCE - Against the run of play, the Wanderers almost find the opener as Troisi is turned into the right side of the box. With defenders not picking him up, Troisi is allowed to creep inside the penalty area to craft a shot onto his right boot. From six yards, Troisi's shot is powerful but hammered straight into side netting. Ferocious; pity it wasn't on target.
14' A free kick for the Wanderers sees them looking to string together a foray which is able to trouble the hosts. With a cross played quickly to the right side, the ball picks out Russell who hangs up a low cross which Redmayne comes out to claim overhead. Nice attempt from the Wanderers however the Sky Blues defence is yet to be bothered.
12' Gordon's now down requiring attention as his effort to slide in to win possession sees Bobo accidentally collect him with a trailing knee. After a drink of water, Gordon signals he's okay to continue despite initially looking groggy after the heavy contact. Would be a massive loss for the visitors if he was required to go off.
10' Gordon's required to track back on this occasion as Le Fondre looks to work the ball inwards from the left channel. With a diagonal ball across the area, Gordon shadows it as far as he's able to before Margush claims the loose ball. The Sky Blues pace in attack continues and it's troubling the visitors.
8' CHANCE - Sydney starting to find their rhythm as Barbarouses works Ninkovic into the area with a terrific through ball. With Margush sprinting off the line to quell the effort, the Wanderers 'keeper does enough as his punch sees the ball cleared out of danger. Western Sydney look off for the time being; they need to get it together.
6' CHANCE - Sydney FC applying the pressure as Barbarouses is squared up outside the top of the penalty area. Opening up with a volley, it's bravely blocked by Aquilina who gets the visitors out of trouble on this occasion. Barbarouses looks the sharpest of all players out there at present.
4' Tentative start to proceedings from Sydney FC who have controlled the ball in the early stages but are lacking for a quality entry inside the area. On this occasion it's Ninkovic who slaloms towards the penalty area however delivers his sideways pass to Ugarkovic in error.
1' Underway at the Sydney Cricket Ground..
Welcome to the SCG for yet another tasty instalment of the Sydney Derby with Sydney FC this time hosting their noisy crosstown rivals in the Western Sydney Wanderers. Still smarting with the 3-2 loss against the Wanderers just a few weeks ago, you can be assured that the Sky Blues will be more than up for this challenge with a Top 6 spot assured should they secure the win today. A picture perfect day in Sydney awaits the opening whistle..
