Final Series Play-offs

FULL TIME; NEWCASTLE JETS 0, CENTRAL COAST MARINERS 1 - Yet another pulsating and intriguing F3 Derby has come its conclusion and this time, it's the Mariners who get the job done, courtesy of a (much-disputed) penalty to Matt Simon. With the Central Coast's leading goalscorer dispatching the ball into the bottom left corner, the Mariners were then forced to defend some late drama and chances from the hosts. With Yuel creating a gilt-edged opportunity in the dying stages, only to be denied by a towering and advancing Birighitti, the Central Coast were able to control until the end of the contest, to run out narrow victors over their rivals, 1-0.
90' A few afters as the Jets frustrations start to boil over as O'Donovan leaves a foot high on Rowles who was looking to clear the ball out of the area. For his part in aggressively questioning the yellow card, Krasniqi gets a yellow card as well and is told to simmer down by Bozanic who leads him away from Referee Barriero. Risky times.
Yellow Card
89' YELLOW CARD JETS! (Liridon Krasniqi).
Yellow Card
88' YELLOW CARD JETS! (Roy O'Donovan).
86' CHANCE, CHANCE, CHANCE - It should be 1-1. It should honestly be 1-1. Newcastle are cursing themselves as Najjarine and Yuel play a great one-two inside their left channel. With the Yuel then continuing his run, Najjarine plays an immaculate lofted through ball which Yuel hits at pace. Trying to thwart the attempt, Birighitti charges off his line and confronts Yuel who only has to turn inside. Instead, Yuel loses control of the ball as it rolls out of play from nine yards out.
84' O'Donovan released on yet another Newcastle counter looks to create some dramas for the Mariners as the ex-Central Coast striker bears down towards goal. With Tongyik able to read the passage, he hits the gas and gets in front of O'Donovan, enough to shield the ball clear on the outer edge of the penalty area.
82' You sense that the Mariners need one more goal to kill off this contest as the Jets are starting to lift in the closing stages. With Jackson working his way to deep inside the penalty area, he flashes a right-footed shot towards Birighitti however the Central Coast 'keeper is already kneeling in order to take it in.
78' A break in play as Rowles stays down clutching his head after what appeared to be a harmless challenge between he and O'Donovan. With the medics coming out to assess the Mariners defender, it appears as though he may have copped an errant forearm under his right eye. He'll stay on.
73' CHANCE - Almost a deadly counter attack from the Jets as Koutroumbis receives the ball and accelerates impressively through midfield. Releasing a fantastic ball which falls into the run of Yuel, the latter zips towards the penalty area before a piece of sharp one-on-one defending from Rowles pushes the ball clear. Amazing defending.
71' Slicker movement from the Jets as Thurgate sits deep and from about 40 yards, loops a ball into the area which finds its mark. The mark in itself is Yuel who tips the ball into the path of Hoffman who heads towards home. It's a looping header which has Birighitti struggling however the offside flag is up in any case.
69' The closest that the Jets have been able to come thus far as the free kick is brought in from the left channel. With Hoffman getting up early, he tees up a pass back into the path of Thurgate. The latter has options presenting in the middle however unloads on a high volley which misses the target by 20 yards.
67' Central Coast's intensity has dropped off a little since they found the back of the net with the Jets enjoying a glut of possession. With Thurgate creating a slalom run for himself down the left, he forces his way towards the box before he collides with Nigro. The free kick's given, much to the bemusement of Nigro.
65' SUBSTITUTION JETS - Koutroumbris ON
62' SAVED - A dangerous raid from the Jets as they go within millimetres of equalising with a fantastic piece of hold-up work from Yuel. Able to trap the ball deep inside the right side of the box, Yuel turns his man before laying a beautiful ball back to O'Donovan. Shooting first-time, O'Donovan curls a cracking ball towards the near from seven yards which Birighitti acrobatically tips over the crossbar.
53' A dubious penalty kick (to be honest) is given to the Mariners, much to the uproar of the Jets faithful (and players). With the contest in itself seeing Thurgate staying in his own space in defending an incoming ball, he crosses the path of Bouman as the Central Coast midfielder falls to ground. Despite VAR looking, they back Referee Barreiro's decision. From the spot, Simon licks his lips at the opportunity and deposits the ball fiercely into the bottom left corner and celebrates with the away fans.
Penalty Goal
50' Unfortunate result for Central Coast as they start to patiently work the ball upfield through Bozanic. With an early ball which is turned out, Bozanic goes again and slides a ball into the deep regions of the right side of the box. Arriving to try and hammer it home is Nigro who's just beaten to it by Thurgate. Marvellous defending.
48' An early free kick for the Jets in a promising position down the right looks to catch the Mariners out. With Bozanic sensing the delivery would curl, he orders Clisby to run up further in the line and as a result, the ball is cut out well enough to clear the danger for Central Coast.
46' Underway in the second half..
HALF TIME; NEWCASTLE JETS 0, CENTRAL COAST MARINERS 0 - A tasty and at times testy F3 Derby has played out as we head into the breaks with this game deadlocked. With the Jets having the better of the clear-cut chances, they were unlucky not to score early in the piece when Hoffman's volley from close range cannoned into Birighitti's face and out of play. Since then, the Mariners have slowly worked their way back into the contest however haven't as yet created many golden opportunities for themselves. With it all to play for in the second half, we head into the interval at 0-0.
45' Hoffman's been baiting Stensness for the past few minutes since their initial tangle and gets his man this time. Hovering over the ball in midfield, Hoffman waits for the contact from Stensness and is bundled down on the turf. With the yellow brandished immediately, Hoffman has a laugh at the expense of Stensness and riles up the Mariners defender. Tasty.
Yellow Card
44' YELLOW CARD MARINERS! (Gianni Stensness).
42' Nice passage for the Jets who go about chalking up an exchange of passes as Abbas goes searching for Prso. With the ball directed towards an angled run from Prso, it's Tongyik who's able to read the effort as he steps over in defence to block the ball before showing neat footwork to exit the box cleanly.
40' It's starting to bubble and broth is this one as Stensness and Tongyik both take off in pursuit of Hoffman. With Stensness angling into Hoffman's back, he's immediately asked to answer for his actions as Hoffman takes objection and pushes Stensness. Nothing further comes of it as the Mariners defender is swamped by four Jets players and walks away.
38' A tangle between two former team-mates as Boogaard senses a long ball will be played over the back and immediately gets to tracking Simon. With the Mariners striker juggling the ball down from his chest, he rises again in the contest and collects Boogaard in the shoulder and conceding a free kick in the process. Simon's stewing; Boogaard laughs it off.
36' An offside flag against Urena sees the Jets going aerial as a long ball is eventually played into a nice position down their left. With the attacking throw-in, it's Hoffman who's able to release O'Donovan who receives and takes off into the left-side of the box. Not wanting to square it, O'Donovan hits it first time and sends it steaming into the side netting.
34' CHANCE - Central Coast are inching closer as Nigro flies down the right channel and looks for a representative in a grey shirt in the middle. Flinging over a low cross, it's Bouman who gets to it first before Nisbet overruns the loose ball. Bouman's flagged offside in either case; good movement though.
32' Now we've got a fair few challenges coming in as Millar is cleaned up Nigro with the former looking to work into the area. Despite the heftiness of the effort, Referee Barreiro is unmoved as the Mariners immediately put the foot down and try and counter from their own six yard box.
30' Confusion reigns as Italiano pleads for an offside flag as Simon looks to latch onto the end of a lofted through ball. With the flag not coming, Simon squares the ball back to Bouman. Bouman's shot though is a fair shank as Bouman makes a query about a handball. It's not forthcoming but a good passage from the visitors nonetheless.
28' A cagey affair is starting to become a little tighter as the Mariners start to feel some pressure in defence. Needing a win to keep their Top 6 aspirations in check, they're under a fair bit of defence at the moment as O'Toole and O'Donovan start to find some space.
26' It's a bit of a stalemate at the moment, as both teams are playing the bulk of the match in the middle of the ground.
24' Millar feeds it through to Hoffman, as he hits it with the right foot outside of the box, but the shot on goal is blocked.
22' The Jets are starting to get some quality possession around the ground.
20' The Mariners are struggling to settle into the game, even though they have had the bulk of the possession.
18' Simon with a ball into the box, but nobody is home for the Mariners and Italiano is able to make an easy save.
R. Tongyik
Yellow Card
16' YELLOW CARD MARINERS - Tongyik goes into the ref's book after bringing down O'Donovan.
14' Nigro brings down O'Donovan on the wing, as the referee intervenes and takes the free kick.
12' The Jets need to change things around, before they concede a goal to the Mariners.
10' Clisby with a through ball over to Simon, who is in a very dangerous position inside the box, but the flag is raised for offside.
9' The Mariners have had a bright start to the game, looking the more dangerous of the two teams.
7' Simon sends it into the path of Urena, who is in very close range, but he misses away to the left.
5' The good news for the Mainers is that Birighitti will continue in the game, as he shakes off the cobwebs.
3' Birighitti goes in hard and cops a ball into the face from Miller, but more importantly saves an almost certain goal.
