Commentary

Thank you for joining our commentary this evening. Until next time, goodbye!
Leicester will be delighted to end their winless streak. The attack was fluent, with Barnes and Maddison impressing, but the defence was vulnerable at times. They face a tough test away to Watford at the weekend in Rodgers’ first match in charge. Missed chances were the story of Brighton’s night as they made it seven Premier League matches without a win. Hughton’s side have struggled on the road all season and desperately need a victory at home to Huddersfield on Saturday.
Leicester City beat Brighton and Hove Albion 2-1 thanks to goals from Gray and Vardy. Gray’s goal early in the first half put the hosts ahead and Vardy doubled the advantage with a clinical finish after the break. Propper got Brighton back in the game soon after, but the visitors could not find an equaliser.
90' + 7' FULL-TIME: LEICESTER CITY 2-1 BRIGHTON AND HOVE ALBION
K. Iheanacho
J. Vardy
Leicester City
90' + 6' Vardy is replaced by Iheanacho as Leicester run down the clock.
90' + 4' Montoya was told to go off and is immediately allowed to return. Brighton punt the ball into the area and Leicester clear.
90' + 3' Montoya goes to ground after a collision with Vardy. The referee is forcing Montoya to leave the field. Brighton's full-back is not too happy about it.
S. Okazaki
J. Maddison
Leicester City
90' + 1' Maddison, who caused Brighton problems all night, is replaced by Okazaki.
90' + 1' There will be a minimum of five added minutes.
90' Barnes gets behind the defence on the left and cuts onto his right foot. He tries a curling effort for the far corner, but it is deflected and Leicester get a corner.
88' Huge chance! Murray is in space at the back post. The ball bounces to him at an awkward height and he opts to shoot towards the near post. His effort goes wide.
86' Locadia takes the free-kick from about 30 yards. His effort hits the bottom of the wall. Bong strikes the rebound and slices it well wide.
J. Vardy
Yellow Card
Leicester City
84' Vardy chases back and challenges Propper around 30 yards from goal. His sliding tackle is ugly and late, resulting in a yellow card.
83' Maguire is flagged offside from the resulting free-kick.
83' Dunk charges out to Barnes as he receives the ball on the edge of the area. Barnes nutmegs the Brighton man and wins a free-kick.
J. Izquierdo
D. Stephens
Brighton & Hove Albion
81' Izquierdo replaces Stephens as Hughton's side push for an equaliser.
81' Locadia has his first chance to carry the ball in the Leicester half and attempts a throughball to the overlapping Bong. It is well overhit and Leicester regain possession.
79' Leicester have taken control of the match in the last few minutes. Brighton are stuck in their own half again, much like the opening 25 minutes.
77' Wonderful from Barnes! Mendy picks out Evans at the back post. The centre-back knocks it down for Barnes, who juggles past a challenge and shoots on the half-volley. His effort goes high and wide.
75' What a run! Maguire gets bored of Leicester's slow possession and carries the ball from the halfway line into the penalty area. He lays it off to Barnes, but his shot is blocked.
74' Leicester threaten to break again after a failed Brighton set piece. The move is slow, though, and Brighton get enough men behind the ball to stop it.
72' Stunning counter from Leicester! Brighton are caught out from the corner, with Vardy carrying the ball 40 yards. He finds Maddison on the right, who plays in Barnes. Barnes connects well with his strike in the area, but it goes wide of Ryan's goal.
71' Some head tennis in midfield ends with a huge header from Dunk. Brighton build an attack from it and win a corner.
N. Mendy
Y. Tielemans
Leicester City
69' Leicester respond to Brighton's increasing control in midfield, bringing Mendy on for Tielemans.
J. Locadia
S. March
Brighton & Hove Albion
67' March has not been able to influence the match much on the left flank. Locadia replaces him.
D. Pröpper
Goal

J. Maddison
Assist
Leicester City
63' Maddison has been a threat throughout the match. He gets the assist for his well-timed pass to Vardy.
J. Vardy
Goal
Leicester City
63' 2-0! VARDY! Another beautiful move from Leicester. Pereira squares the ball to Maddison in front of the Brighton defence, and he takes a couple of touches, forcing them to back off. A beautifully weighted throughball finds Vardy, who fires past Ryan with a powerful right-footed shot.
61' Just wide! Bissouma receives the ball on the edge of the area and shoots with his right. Schmeichel dives for it, but Bissouma's effort goes just wide.
60' Maddison has the opportunity to slide Barnes in behind the defence. His throughball is too heavy, though, and Leicester are forced to pass back. They keep the move alive and Barnes forces a corner.
58' Leicester create another opportunity on the break. Gray cuts the ball back and they are queueing up for a shot, but they make a mess of it and Brighton clear.
57' Brighton have had 70% possession in the second half.
55' March tees up Stephens from range. The Brighton midfielder hits it first time and it is deflected for a corner.
53' Knockaert takes the corner with his left, but Leicester head it clear.
52' March pressures Evans on the left, forcing a corner for Brighton.
Y. Bissouma
P. Groß
Brighton & Hove Albion
51' Big loss for Brighton as Gross goes off injured and is replaced by Bissouma.
51' Bissouma is getting ready on the sideline and Gross is hobbling off.
50' Gross looks to have injured himself with the backheel. The physios are on and he's holding his hamstring.
49' What a miss! Maddison gives the ball away inside Leicester's third. Knockaert plays a superb reverse pass to Gross in the area, who backheels to Murray. The veteran striker just has to pass it into an empty net, but he opts for power and it goes well over the bar.
48' Gray has to leave the field because the physios came on. He immediately returns.
48' Gray goes to ground after being caught on the side of the head by Bong's forearm. He receives treatment from the physios on the field.
47' Vardy gets a sniff. Maguire threads a pass to Gray on the right, who dribbles into the area and dinks a cross to Vardy. The former England international is unmarked, but his header is well wide.
46' A high Leicester press forces a clearance from Dunk soon after the kick-off.
46' The referee gets us back underway for the second half.
Rodgers, who is watching from the stands, will be impressed with what he saw from his new team early on. Barnes, Maddison, Tielemans and Gray have all posed a threat, though Vardy had a quiet half. The defence has been shaky at times, but the Foxes will fancy their chances of scoring a second after the break. Hughton will be disappointed his side are trailing but has reason to be positive. The visitors improved in the final 15 minutes of the first half, and Knockaert could easily have equalised. Hughton will consider introducing Locadia early in the second half.
Leicester lead Brighton 1-0 at half-time thanks to Gray’s cool finish. Leicester were in the ascendancy for much of the first half, but Brighton fought back, forcing Schmeichel into action on a couple of occasions.
45' + 1' HALF-TIME: LEICESTER CITY 1-0 BRIGHTON AND HOVE ALBION
45' + 1' Ndidi plays a driven pass to Barnes, but he's put under pressure by Montoya and loses it in midfield.
45' There will be one added minute.
43' Propper snatches at a chance inside the area and his effort goes sailing into the stands.
43' Duffy picks out Knockaert with a perfect switch of play. The winger carries the ball into the area and gets to the byline, flashing the ball across goal. Pereira beats Murray to it, diverting the ball behind for a goal kick.
41' Ryan aims for Bong from his goal kick. Brighton's left-back loses out, though, and the ball bounces out for a Leicester throw.
39' Gross and Propper play a one-two on the right. Gross has time to cross, but his delivery is woeful and it goes out for a goal kick.
37' Vardy presses Duffy as Brighton try to play out from the back and nearly forces a mistake. Duffy manages to avoid embarrassment and pass to Knockaert.
36' Superb save from Schmeichel! Knockaert fires to Schmeichel's right from inside the area after a cut back from Bong. Schmeichel reacts quickly to get a strong hand to it and get the ball away from danger.
35' Maddison gets space between the lines and spins, running at the defence. He fires a pass to Vardy, but Leicester's striker is unable to control.
34' Barnes drives down the left once again as Brighton's defenders back off him. He squares it to Maddison, who is quickly pressed, and Brighton manage to stop the attack.
32' Brighton have the opportunity to counter, but the move is slowed down as Murray drifts wide. Leicester get back behind the ball and Ndidi wins it back.
31' Brighton put a few passes together on the right. Knockaert dribbles into midfield and plays a pass for Murray. It is nowhere near Brighton's target man and Schmeichel claims.
29' Barnes escapes down the left again, leaving several Brighton defenders behind. He gets into the area and looks to find Gray, but Bong reads it well to clear.
28' Brief panic in the Leicester defence, but Murray misses his kick as the ball trickles across the area. Leicester scramble to clear it.
27' Save! Gross is given space to shoot from the edge of the area. His effort is deflected, forcing Schmeichel into a leaping save to divert it over the bar.
26' March and Pereira continue their contest. The pair battle for the ball on the left and Pereira does well to win a throw.
25' A punt towards March on the Brighton left forces a leaping header from Pereira, who gives away a throw. Brighton do not make anything of the following attack.
Martín Montoya
Yellow Card
Brighton & Hove Albion
23' Leicester build from the back again, finding Barnes out on the left flank. He goes flying past Montoya, winning a corner. Montoya pulled Barnes back and is given a yellow card.
22' An aerial ball up to Gross reaches its intended target, but his header drops to Ndidi.
21' Murray wins a free-kick in the centre circle, drawing the foul from Evans. Brighton have an opportunity to move up the pitch.
19' Brighton cannot string any passes together. March looks very frustrated as a pass intended for him bounces to Evans and Leicester regain possession.
18' Duffy is clutching his ribs after a collision with Ndidi at the corner. He doesn't look like he will need any treatment at the moment.
17' Gross whips in the set piece and Duffy leaps highest to win the header. It flies over the bar.
17' Bong does well on the left to win Brighton their first corner.
16' Dunk beats Vardy in the air, giving Brighton a rare spell of possession with their defence and midfield.
14' Great save! Leicester walk through Brighton again. Chilwell is left in space in the final third and carries the ball into the area, eventually squaring it to Gray. The winger shoots for the bottom-left corner and Ryan does well to get down and save.
12' Leicester have been dominant so far. Brighton have been unable to keep the ball and are losing the midfield battle. Tielemans is controlling the match.
D. Gray
Goal
Leicester City
10' GOAAAL! GRAY PUTS LEICESTER AHEAD! What a lovely goal. Gray is left in acres of space after Leicester win the ball in midfield and stays onside. Tielemans slides a pass between two defenders to Gray and he remains calm, firing it past Ryan to put Leicester 1-0 up.
Y. Tielemans
Assist
Leicester City
10' Tielemans is credited with the assist for a well-weighted pass to Gray.
8' Maguire carries the ball out of defence, drawing Brighton players towards him. He finds Chilwell on the right, who quickly moves it to Tielemans. The youngster gets space and shoots from range. It is blocked.
7' Bong has time to play a forward pass and hits an aimless clipped ball straight through to Schmeichel.
6' Blocked! Maddison gets to the byline and cuts back for Vardy. The striker's effort is blocked.
5' Tielemans turns on the ball between the lines and quickly slides a pass through to Vardy. It is slightly overhit, however, and goes out for a goal kick.
4' Chilwell attempts a give-and-go on the left and is taken out as he releases the ball. He complains to the referee, but he does not get a free-kick.
3' Maddison takes the set piece on the right and mishits, which sees the ball easily cleared by Brighton.
3' Stephens fouls Maddison on the right wing, giving the hosts a free-kick in a good crossing position.
2' Barnes plays his way out of pressure in the left-back position, but he's unable to keep the ball in play as he tries a one-two down the flank.
1' The referee blows his whistle and we are underway!
The teams are out and we'll be ready to go shortly...
Leicester have only lost five consecutive home league matches on one previous occasion, doing so between January and March 1959 in the top-flight.
Hughton named a heavily rotated team for Brighton’s last match, when they beat Derby County in the FA Cup. Only Duffy, Knockaert and Stephens retain their places from the cup outing earlier this month. Jahanbakhsh and Locadia drop to the bench, providing Hughton with attacking options to change the game. Brighton had a number of injury concerns ahead of this match, but they are all fit to play apart from Leon Balogun. Florin Andone is still suspended.
Stowell and Sadler make a couple of changes to the Leicester side that lost heavily to Crystal Palace at the weekend. Chilwell returns to the team having missed out on Saturday, which sees Fuchs drop to the bench. Ghezzal is also left out of the eleven as Gray returns to the starting line-up. Morgan has not started any of Leicester’s last four matches, and he has to settle for a place among the substitutes again this evening.
SUBS: Jurgen Locadia, Jose Izquierdo, Bernardo, Dan Burn, Alireza Jahanbakhsh, David Button, Yves Bissouma.
BRIGHTON AND HOVE ALBION (4-3-3): Mat Ryan; Martin Montoya, Shane Duffy, Lewis Dunk, Gaetan Bong; Pascal Gross, Dale Stephens, Davy Propper; Anthony Knockaert, Glenn Murray, Solly March.
SUBS: Nampalys Mendy, Danny Ward, Kelechi Iheanacho, Wes Morgan, Christian Fuchs, Rachid Ghezzal, Shinji Okazaki.
LEICESTER CITY (4-3-3): Kasper Schmeichel; Ricardo Pereira, Jonny Evans, Harry Maguire, Ben Chilwell; Youri Tielemans, Wilfred Ndidi, James Maddison; Demarai Gray, Jamie Vardy, Harvey Barnes.
Leicester are unbeaten in their three Premier League meetings with Brighton, winning both games last season before drawing the reverse fixture 1-1 in December.
Brighton have struggled of late, winning one of their last 11 in the Premier League. Chris Hughton’s side looked safe at the end of 2018 but have been sucked into the relegation battle and are just three points outside the bottom three. They have eight points on the road all season and will be short of confidence coming into this match.
Leicester have appointed Brendan Rodgers as their new manager, having sacked Claude Puel on Sunday. Mike Stowell and Adam Sadler will take charge of the team this evening, however, as the Foxes look to end a seven-match winless run. An embarrassing 4-1 home defeat to Crystal Palace on Saturday sealed Puel’s fate and leaves Leicester down in 12th.
Welcome to the live commentary of the Premier League match between Leicester City and Brighton and Hove Albion.
