Harambee Stars continued with their fine run under Stanley Okumbi after they beat DRC Congo 2-1 on Sunday

Harambee Stars came into the match spirits high after winning the reverse fixture by a solitary goal scored by Michael Olunga.

It was the visitors who started the first few minutes well, pushing for an early opener, as balls were played wide to Junior Kabananga who had put Joackins Atudo at bay.

As The Leopards pressed on, Brian Mandela did well to win the ball, fed Michael Olunga who cut the inner side of Chancel Mbemba before unleashing an unstoppable shot past Joel Kiasumbua.

Three minutes later, the impressive Onyango found himself one-on-one with goalkeeper but took so long to unleash a shot, and Fabrice Nsakala did well to recover.

It was a wakeup call for the visitors who pressed well, and won a free-kick 35 yards from the Kenyan goal as Brian Mandela fouled Jonathan Bolingi. Former Chelsea forward Gael Kakuta rose to the occasion, sending the ball past desperate Boniface Oluoch to level the scores.

The Leopards have a better record against the hosts, having won four times, drawn once and lost twice and it is a match the visitors aimed to win, with Kenya keen on extending their unbeaten run.

With Zesco United forward Anthony Akumu out injured, it was New York Cosmos defender David 'Cheche' Ochieng' who partnered Captain Victor Mugubi Wanyama in the midfield.

Posta Rangers’ Joakins Atudo was having a torrid time down at the right, and he gave away a foul in the 17th minute, but Neekens Kebano failed to trouble Boniface Oluoch in goal. In the 24th minute, Congo DR won a corner and Oluoch flapped the ball dangerously. It fell on defender Tisserand who headed it in, but Aboud Omar headed it out, though the visitors felt it had crossed the line.

In the 30th minute, keeper Joel Kiasumbua was called into action twice, to deny Michael Olunga and Samuel Onyango, forcing the ball out to a fruitless corner.

In the second half, the visitors came back full of energy, pushing Kenyans in their own half, and in the 47th minute, the dangerous Junior Kabananga got a space in the danger-zone but shot just wide.

It could have been 2-1 in favour of the visitors, but Kakuta was denied in the 63rd minute by the linesman's offside flag after he had excellently lobed the ball past Oluoch.

In the 70th minute, Kenya scored the winning goal courtesy of Olunga, who finished off a nice move initiated by David Owino, who fed Onyango, and the Ulinzi Stars man precisely assisted the towering striker.

Despite late pressure by the opponents, Kenya held on to grab vital victory and extend their unbeaten run to ten games.
