Which Africans have 'done it' in multiple major leagues?

Still only 23, Hakimi has—remarkably—already won silverware with clubs in four of Europe’s five major leagues.

With Real Madrid, among other honours, he was a Champions League winner in 2018, then followed that up with the German Super Cup at Borussia Dortmund a year later.

After moving to Italy, he promptly became a Serie A winner with Internazionale, and 12 months later—after signing for Paris Saint-Germain—clinched Ligue 1 with the French giants.

As rumours of a potential move to Chelsea abound—and the chance to prove himself in yet another major league—GOAL’s Ed Dove celebrates some of the African greats who thrived in multiple footballing heartlands.

As the first player in history to win two continental trebles back to back—and achieving the feat with clubs in two different countries—Eto’o was a shoo-in for this list.

He first achieved the feat with Barcelona in 2009, and then repeated the trick—now at Inter—a year later.

The Cameroon great was a key figure in these achievements and, while with Barca, became the second player to score in two separate Champions League finals.

Arguably the greatest African player of all time, he also took his talent to the English, Turkish and Russian top flights.

A teammate of Eto’o’s at Barcelona, Toure was also part of that iconic 2009 side before going on to achieve great things elsewhere.

While Barca without the two African superstars morphed into another glorious side, Yaya would be part of the collection of players who transformed Manchester City into a modern super club.

He was a key figure in the FA Cup success of 2011, and of course, the Premier League that followed in 2012.

The Mali midfield monster enjoyed immense domestic success between 2002 and 2008, despite swapping clubs—and countries—during that run.

Between ’02 and ’06 he was part of the all-conquering Olympique Lyonnais side, clinching four French titles in the process and establishing himself as one of Europe’s best defensive midfielders.

After swapping OL for Real Madrid, he then helped Los Merengues end their wait for the Spanish title by helping them to top flight victory in ’07 and ’08.

The grizzled centre-back was a class act in both the Italian and the German top flights, enjoying a spell of concentrated success in both leagues across the latter part of the last decade.

Arguably the best performances of his career were delivered at AS Roma, but a move to Bayern Munich would lead to two league titles under Pep Guardiola.

In 2016, he signed for Juventus—initially on loan—and would play his part in three Serie A-winning teams over the years to follow.

Salah has proven to be a big success in every country in which he’s played, demonstrating a superb ability to adapt to the differing contexts and environments that each different top flight brings.

After leaving Egypt, he went on to win a pair of Swiss titles with FC Basel, and following a false start at Chelsea, duly proved to be a hit in Italy with AS Roma, where he was the club’s Player of the Season in 2016.

Returning to England with Liverpool, he promptly ‘cracked’ the Premier League, embarking on a goal and trophy-laden spell that continues to this day.
