Goal takes a look at how the Soweto giants' players performed while they were away at other clubs on loan in the just-ended season

  • Josef Zinnbauer

Tough call for Zinnbauer to make on loanees

After Orlando Pirates coach Josef Zinnbauer made eight major signings at the beginning of the season, some players were sent away on loan to accommodate the new arrivals.

In a season in which some signings did little to impress, those out at other clubs were trying to convince coach Zinnbauer that they deserve to return to the Soweto giants.

The German will now have to decide on which of the loanees to bring back based on how they performed elsewhere.

  • Mthokozisi Dube, Golden Arrows, June 2021

    Mthokozisi Dube - Golden Arrows

The arrival of Wayde Jooste complicated matters for Dube who was then loaned out to Golden Arrows where he did not disappoint.

After a difficult start to the season where he missed the opening Premier Soccer League games, the 28-year-old picked himself up and started all the remaining 26 league matches.

The right-back also featured in Arrows' early exit from the Nedbank Cup.

With Jooste not disappointing, the full recovery of Abel Mabaso as well as Paseka Mako and Bongani Sam also being fielded at right-back, Zinnbauer is stacked in that position.

The German will have a tough decision to make on Dube who never put a foot wrong.

  • Justice Chabalala, Bloemfontein Celtic & Wayde Jooste, Orlando Pirates, November 2020

    Justice Chabalala - Bloemfontein Celtic

Since January 2017, the centre-back from Giyani, Limpopo has endured some loan spells, starting with a stint at Chippa United and now at Celtic.

He has been at Siwelele for one-and-a-half seasons now and in this term he featured in 17 league games, two MTN8 matches and made an appearance in the Caf Confederation Cup.

With Thulani Hlatshwayo falling way short of expectations and Zinnbauer being forced to play Innocent Maela as a centre-back, defensive frailties were noted at Pirates and that could see Chabalala returning.

  • Tebogo Tlolane, Maritzburg United, December 2020

    Tebogo Tlolane - Maritzburg United

Another player who has spent most of his Pirates career away on loan, Tlolane established himself as a regular at Maritzburg, starting 24 league matches and coming on as a substitute in one while scoring two goals and an assist.

Since making 29 league starts for Chippa United during the 2018/19 season, the just-ended campaign saw him recording his second-highest appearances in his career.

Having also featured in all Maritzburg's Cup games, the 26-year-old midfielder who can also play as a left-back hopes he did enough to convince Zinnbauer that he deserves to return.

  • Gladwin Shitolo of Golden Arrows, February 2020

    Gladwin Shitolo - Golden Arrows

The 31-year-old midfielder has been away on loan for the past two and half seasons and has impressed, with some regular football, during all his loan stints shared between Chippa United and Arrows.

But surprisingly he was not recalled and Shitolo would be hoping that Zinnbauer includes him in his plans this time around.

  • Sandile Mthethwa, Chippa United, February 2020

    Sandile Mthethwa - Chippa United

Mthethwa has, interestingly, not played for the Pirates senior team since joining the club from the KZN Academy in January 2016 and has endured some loan stints at Richards Bay and now Chippa United.

The Chilli Boys' record of conceding 37 goals in 30 league games might help centre-back Mthethwa in presenting his case to Zinnbauer.

He made 22 PSL appearances for Chippa, scoring once and making an assist, before playing four Nedbank Cup games as Chippa reached the final.
