Having achieved a remarkable amount in his nearly two years with the club, the abrupt ending to his stay sent shortwaves through the South African soccer fraternity.However, at a club known to be ruthless, it was not completely surprising. That's given also that Mosimane talked recently about 'fatigue and high blood pressure' through coaching Al Ahly, comments he was subsequently criticised for. Ahly's Caf Champions League final defeat would probably also have contributed, as has the fact that the club have been outdone by local rivals Zamalek in the domestic league both this season and last.

A surprise end?

No-one can take away what are some remarkable acclomplishments: in Egypt the former Sundowns manager won the Caf Champions League twice, the Caf Super Cup twice, and also claimed the Egyptian Cup at Ahly. (When he arrived at the side in October 2020, the team had already secured the Egyptian league title under predecessor Rene Weiler).He also equaled the Egyptian team's best finish of third position at the Fifa Club World Cup - twice in a row.Add in the 2016 Caf Champions League victory with Sundowns, Mosimane now has three continental titles to his name, enough to put him right up there with the greatest African coaches, surely.He's also the only non-Egyptian African coach to have been in charge.

A bag of trophies

The pressures of working at such a big institution as Ahly were always going to be enormous. Not to mention assimilating into a new culture where English is not the first language.With so much to contend with, it's highly commendable that he stayed so long - 619 days and 97 matches.In the past two decades at Ahly, only legendary Portuguese coach Manual Jose (1977 days, 252 matches) has been in charge for more games. Hossam El Badry was at the helm for 628 days between 2016 and 2018, but oversaw two matches less - 95 - than Mosimane.

A stay longer than many

Mosimane secured an average 2.24 points per match. It puts him right up near the top of the Ahly coaches list, at least those who were in charge for at least 50 matches. He flew the flag high for SA soccer and should serve as an inspiration for PSL coaches to expand their horizons.

Impressive points haul

Mosimane's achievements are all the more impressive considering the conditions he worked under. As a foreigner there appeared to be a reluctance to fully accept him and he came under constant criticism from former players and the likes in the media. He took it all in his stride although perhaps at the end there were signs of weariness.
