'Benching Ronaldo was definitely McCarthy's idea' - Bafana legend linked to Manchester United defeat

South African coach Benni McCarthy has been blamed for Manchester United's decision to bench Cristiano Ronaldo in their 6-3 defeat against Manchester City on Sunday.

The 37-year-old Portuguese forward was not given game time in the derby as Erling Haaland stole the show with another hat-trick and Phil Foden also grabbed three to silence their rivals in the Premier League showdown.

Anthony Martial, who had recovered from injury, came from the bench too score two and add to Antony's well-taken effort. McCarthy joined Man United in July after manager Erik ten Hag added to him to his backroom team as a first-team coach.

His role was to handle strikers, and Ronaldo's absence against Man City has left a section of supporters on social media disappointed, with others blaming the former AmaZulu coach for the decision.
