2023 Afcon Qualifiers: Predicting Uganda’s starting XI to face Niger – Lukwago, Aucho to start

Despite conceding two goals in their group opener against the Desert Warriors, the 27-year-old KCCA FC custodian pulled great saves especially in the first half to deny the former champions and remains the favourite to keep the spot against Le Mena The Mena.

Charles Lukwago

The 20-year-old Vipers SC right-back put up a good display at Stade du 5 Juillet to keep Algeria’s Rachid Ghezzal at bay, and he will most likely maintain the role to help the Cranes keep a clean sheet this time around in Kampala.

Gavin Kizito

The 29-year-old, who turns out for Viktoria Zizkov in the Czech Republic, was preferred to start ahead of Martin Kizza of Express FC in Algeria, and he did not disappoint, as he put up a superb show, shielding keeper Lukwago on many occasions. He will surely remain in coach Sredojevic’s starting XI to face Niger.

Isaac Muleme

Fresh from winning the Ugandan Premier League (UPL) title with Vipers, the 25-year-old justified his starting role in the defeat against the Desert Warriors and could once again be preferred by Sredojevic to partner Bevis Mugabi at the heart of the Cranes’ backline.

Halid Lwaliwa

The 27-year-old, who turns out for Scottish Premiership side Motherwell, was the main link in the Cranes' defence against Algeria and his tough tackles were a nightmare for the likes of Youcef Belaili and Islam Slimani. He will probably get another chance to help the Cranes pick their first win at home.

Bevis Mugabi

The Bright Stars FC midfielder was handed his debut for the Cranes in the game against Algeria ahead of regular Allan Kyambadde and despite playing away from home, he was superb linking up with Yanga SC’s Khalid Aucho.He remains favourite to face Le Mena The Mena on home soil.

Marvin Youngman

The 28-year-old is an almost guaranteed starter for the East African side owing to his superb display against the Desert Warriors, where he won a penalty that Farouk Miya failed to convert in the first half. His main job will be to anchor the midfield and help in building up play from the back.

Khalid Aucho

Despite not finding the back of the net against Algeria, the attacking midfielder, who turns out for Algerian outfit AC Paradou, remains the preferred player on the right wing. Okello's trickery, pace, and eye for goal or assist, make him dangerous at any given time, and he could get the nod to start again in the home game.

Allan Okello

The 24-year-old, who features for Ukrainian club Lviv, missed a great chance to level matters for the Cranes from the penalty spot in Algeria but overall he was dangerous behind the strikers. Miya could get another chance to redeem himself and give his side their first victory in the qualifiers.

Farouk Miya

The captain of the side since goalkeeper Denis Onyango’s retirement remains one of the experienced heads in the Cranes set-up and is expected to feature in the left wing. He was superb in Algiers with his long range shots and could partner Milton Karisa in the attacking role.

Emmanuel Okwi

The 26-year-old, who features for Vipers, was preferred to start ahead of Fahad Bayo in their group opener and he almost scored on two occasions. He will likely get another chance to partner with Okwi as the Cranes go for their first victory.
