Granit Xhaka has pronounced himself "relieved" after learning a knee injury he suffered in training on Thursday is just a bruise.

With less than three weeks to go before Switzerland begin their World Cup campaign against Brazil, the injury was initially thought to have put Xhaka's participation in danger.

But following tests, the Switzerland FA have confirmed that the Arsenal midfielder suffered a knee bruise and is not in danger of missing the World Cup.

“I’m very relieved,” Xhaka said on the Swiss FA website.

Xhaka will not feature in Switzerland's friendly with Spain on Sunday, but could return for the game against Japan on June 8.

The 25-year-old is a key component of Switzerland's midfield, as the European nation looks to advance from the group stage for a second straight World Cup.

Xhaka played 11 times in their World Cup qualifying campaign, including in both legs of the play-off win over Northern Ireland in November. He scored two goals in qualifying.

After their match against Brazil on June 17, Switzerland square off against Serbia on June 22 and then close out Group E play by facing Costa Rica on June 27.
