Mitch Hildebrandt did his best Claudio Bravo impression Wednesday night.
The FC Cincinnati goalkeeper stopped three penalties as the USL side shocked Bastian Schweinsteiger and the Chicago Fire before 32,287 at Nippert Stadium in the U.S. Open Cup round of 16.
Hildebrandt denied Nemanja Nikolic, Arturo Alvarez and Juninho, with Cincinnati earning a 3-1 shootout win after 120 minutes of scoreless soccer in front of the second largest crowd in Open Cup history.
The 28-year-old's heroics came hours after Bravo grabbed headlines around the world for making three consecutive saves as Chile ousted Portugal in the Confederations Cup semifinals.
Having previously bounced the Columbus Crew in the Open Cup round of 32, Cincinnati will travel to face fellow second-division side Miami FC in the quarterfinals July 12 — guaranteeing a non-MLS team will play in the semifinals for the first time since 2011.
