A 90th minute goal from Lindsey Horan was enough for the United States women’s national team to salvage a 1-1 draw against Australia in the Tournament of Nations, extending the USWNT undefeated streak to 18 games.
It was Australia which had last inflicted defeat on the USWNT, having emerged victorious when the two sides met nearly a year to the day in the previous Tournament of Nations.
In between the USWNT had gone through a 17-match unbeaten streak, winning 15 and drawing just two over that span.
That match on July 27, 2017 saw a 67th minute goal by Tameka Butt prove the difference in a 1-0 victory.
This time Chloe Logarzo was played into space by Lisa De Vanna and powered home a shot past goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher in the 22nd minute to give Australia the advantage.
It looked as if that would be good enough for Australia to once again inflict defeat on the USWNT but a late corner turned heartbreak.
Megan Rapinoe swung a delivery into the area, which Horan nodded home past Australia goalkeeper Lydia Williams to get the game level.
It was Horan’s second goal of 2018, having previously scored in the USWNT’s 6-2 win over Mexico in April.
The four-team tournament now is wide open as they head to the final game, to be played on August 8. The USWNT and Australia are tied in first place, each with four points and a +2 goal difference.
The USWNT will face off against Brazil in their finale, with the Brazilians having defeated Japan earlier Sunday to get them to three points.
Australia will face winless Japan in their final game of the Tournament of Nations.
