Allan Wanga returned to Ruaraka to haunt the club that released him in January with a second goal that may have a severe effect on Tusker’s title race.
The victory could not have come at a better time for Homeboyz, who could have played their last game under the supervision of coach Mike Mururi, who is set to leave at the end of the month.
Homeboyz, who had never picked three points against Tusker in the last six meetings before this victory, had dropped two points against Kariobangi Sharks last weekend but recovered well to hand Matano a third successive defeat.
The visitors went into the match with clear intent. Wanga missed a chance to shoot Homeboyz to the lead after he picked a loose ball, but Eugene Asike picked himself up to deny the striker the golden opportunity to punish his former side.
Brian Osumba was denied by Homeboyz defence after receiving a nice delivery from the right but the visitors cleared the line to keep off the danger.
Eston Esiye scored his second goal of the season with a ferocious free-kick from outside 35-meter yard that slipped through the legs of David Okello in Tusker goal to hand Homeboyz a deserved lead in the 27th minute.
Okello in particular and Tusker, in general, will have no one but the state of their poor pitch to blame for the opening goal after the ball bounced off the bumpy ground to slip in between the goalkeeper’s legs.
The opening half was fast and physical, but it was the visitors, who took all the credit for their courageous display. Eugene Asike was lucky to have escaped an early shower after he committed a dangerous tackle on Moses Mudavadi that earned him a yellow card in the process.
Wanga wasted another golden opportunity with a minute to go when he failed to connect a nice pass after playing a one-two with Asiye. Matano threw in Jackson Macharia, who brought in a punch in Tusker’s midfield that saw the Brewers take control of the match.
Tusker twice came close to hitting home an equalizer but Homeboyz held their grounds. Wanga and Wafula combined well but the final delivery was not enough of a danger to threaten Okello.
