Tanko Ibrahim named Ghana assistant coach

Ghana FA have presented a new technical staff of the Black Stars, tasking them with winning the 2019 Afcon and qualifying to the 2018 WC

Ghana Football Association on Tuesday presented Black Stars new coach Kwesi Appiah and his backroom staff to the media in a ceremony held in Accra.

The 56-year-old was handed a two-year deal a fortnight ago, returning to a position he previously held between 2012 and 2014.

Former Cameroon assistant coach Tanko Ibrahim has been named first assistant to Appiah while Maxwell Konadu becomes second assistant.

Former Ghana captain Stephen Appiah will be the technical coordinator, with Richard Kingson taking over from Nassamu Yakubu as goalkeeping coach.

Dr. Chris Adomako will be the new team doctor, with John Nyamekye as physiotherapist, while Nii Amassah Anum and Ishmael Amadu have been named as masseur and welfare/ kits officer respectively.

According to Ghana FA vice president, George Afriyie, Appiah has been tasked to qualify the Black Stars to the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations to be staged in Cameroon.

“Kwesi Appiah's target is to qualify Ghana to the Afcon 2019 and win the title,” Afriyie said.

“That is the target we've given to him for now but he should also employ his possible best to qualify Ghana to the 2018 World Cup. We hope this is not a tall order for him since the Black Stars have done so well recently. We hope he will be able to do that. The GFA will help him by providing everything necessary to make his work easy and successful,” he added.

There have been rumours in the local media that Asamoah Gyan will be relieved of his position as Ghana captain, with West Ham United star Andre Ayew taking over but Appiah has refuted such reports.

"Obviously nothing has changed even in my absence and Asamoah Gyan will remain the captain of Ghana unless he is sick or injured. When it happens that way, the next in command which is Andre Ayew will take over if he is in the team at that time," Appiah said.

His first outing in his second coming will be a 2019 Afcon qualifying match against Ethiopia in June 11 before facing Mexico and USA in international friendlies on June 28 and July 1 respectively.
