Anfield colleague Henderson believes Salah has to be considered one of the finest players on the planet, with his consistency and talismanic presence making it easy for comparisons to be drawn with iconic multiple Ballon d’Or winners at Barcelona and Real Madrid.

The Liverpool skipper told reporters at the PFA Awards: "Messi and Ronaldo have done it at that level for 10 years plus, but Mo is good enough to stay at this level and keep improving.

"Definitely this season in terms of the way he's played, the goals he's scored and the impact he's had on games, means he's up there with the best."

Salah saw off competition from Manchester City star Kevin De Bruyne to land the PFA Player of the Year gong, with Leroy Sane, David Silva, David de Gea and Harry Kane also left trailing in his wake.

Henderson believes a man acquired by Liverpool for just £36.9 million in the summer of 2017 has been the Premier League’s standout performer, with his efforts across a remarkable debut campaign seeing him exceed all expectations.

He added: "He came in during the summer, settled in really well during pre-season and straight away we knew we had a top player.

"He was amazing in training and during the pre-season games and has continued that form throughout the season.

"He's been fantastic on and off the field. When he joined from Roma, we expected him to be good but he's gone above and beyond that."
