Kenyan duo Brian Mandela Onyango and Joseph Okumu squared off in the Premier Soccer League in South Africa on Sunday as Maritzburg United hosted and defeated Free State Stars 2-1 at the Harry Gwala Stadium in Pietermaritzburg.
Mandela returned to United’s lineup after sitting out the 4-1 thumping by SuperSport United last week while Okumu watched from the bench.
The 22-year old Harambe Stars defender - Mandela - is a regular at the Team of Choice where he has featured 16 times in the 19 PSL matches played by the Kwa Zulu Natal outfit so far this campaign.
He has also scored two goals on the occasion.
Okumu on the other hand would’ve been hoping for a change in coaching personnel at the club after struggling to get game time under former coaches Giovanni Solinas and Denis Lavagne.
This indeed happened and Solinas was replaced by current coach Serame Letsoaka. Letsoaka drafted the 19-year-old to the starting lineup of his first encounter where they were thumped 3-1 by Kaizer Chiefs. That would be the Kenyan defender’s final appearance to date and he was once again watching from the bench on Sunday.
Okumu has only afforded seven appearances so far this campaign for the struggling side Bethlehem based side.
Elsewhere, McDonald Mariga Wanyama made his 23rd appearance for his Serie B side Latina in thier 1-0 win over fellow strugglers Ternana on Saturday.
Johanna Omolo -midfiedler of Belgian First Division B club Royal Antwerp featured the whole game in thier 1-0 win over Lommel United whilst country man Ayub Masika did not feature for Lierse.
