Nigeria set to lose Southampton teenager Michael Obafemi to Ireland

Southampton striker Michael Obafemi is in line to make his international debut for Ireland as they take on Northern Ireland and Denmark.

After making his professional bow against Tottenham Hotspur in January aged 17 years and 199 days, becoming the Saints’ second youngest player to make a top-flight appearance, Obafemi made his 2018-19 bow in their heavy loss to Manchester City in early November.

Manager Mark Hughes talked up his impressive performance and revealed his plans for the 18-year-old whom he handed a second consecutive runout in their win over Watford at the weekend.

Such displays earned him a spot in Ireland’s final squad for Northern Ireland friendly and UEFA Nations League closer against Denmark.

And with club teammate Shane Long ruled out of the ties due to an ankle injury, Martin O’Neill may hand the teenager some minutes in Thursday’s friendly with Michael O’Neill’s side, and/or against the Danes.

Obafemi was born in Dublin and grew up in London, England but is eligible to represent Nigeria through his parents, both from the west African country. Also, England were reported to have indicated interest in the talented teenager.

He had represented Ireland’s U19 side four times with a goal to his name.
