The 18-year-old's late header gave coach Thomas Dennerby a winning start at the helms of the Super Falcons against the Female Eagles

Thomas Dennerby recorded his first win as Nigeria women coach as his ladies edged past Mali 1-0 in Thursday's WAFU Women's Nations Cup at the Sports Park Stadium.

Peace Efih's injury-time goal was all the Super Falcons required clipping the wings of the stubborn Hussien Mohammed's side that had the intent of avenging their 2016 Africa Women's Cup of Nations defeat in Abidjan.

The Malians troubled Dennerby's ladies, who remained solid defensively in the first half which ended in a drab stalemate.

The African queens stayed calm and reclaimed possessions in the second half and left it till late to snatch the victory through Efih's header.

Meanwhile, Mali's Diarra Fatim was named the Best Woman Player of the Match for her incredible display despite arriving the late for the competition.

The result means Nigeria accrued three points but will be placed second in Group B behind Senegal who thrashed Togo 6-0 in the first group game.

The Super Falcons will face group leaders, Senegal in their next group phase encounter on Saturday, while pointless Togo will tackle Mali in their match on the same day.
