Young Selangor forward Sean Euguene Selvaraj repaid the faith shown in him by head coach Nazliazmi Nasir, who gave him his first ever start in a Selangor shirt, by scoring his first goal for them in their 2-1 Malaysia Super League win over Negeri Sembilan, his boyhood club on Saturday.
In the 56th minute, Spanish striker Rufino Segovia smartly dummied the Negeri defenders, to allow a cross by Namathevan Arunasalam from the right to be received by Sean in the middle of the Negeri penalty box. The 22-year old player did not miss from close range, scoring the hosts' second goal of the night.
But Nazliazmi has warned Sean not to be content with this, and urged him to work on many aspects of his game.
However, the former youth coach first told the reporters in the post-match press conference that the win, the Red Giants' first after four straight defeats in the league, was a timely morale booster ahead of their next league match, against leaders JDT this Tuesday.
"Praise Allah for the three points, the win is a morale booster in our effort to improve our standings in the league, as well as for our away match against JDT.
"Even though they made a few mistakes, but it's how they covered (that worked) and we came away with the three points tonight," responded the coach.
When questioned on the absence of skipper Razman Roslan, Nazliazmi said that he had to make changes in their line up after almost losing to Kuala Lumpur in their second leg quarter-final match last week.
"I had to make changes, something all teams need from time to time. The players need to accept this for the good of the team," he remarked.
He however declined to praise Sean extensively despite his goal, preferring to comment on the forward's need to improve further in the future.
"He played well, but he must not be content. He got a goal but he made a few mistakes, and I always tell my men to improve in every game, so as to become more effective players and help the team more.
"He needs to work on his scoring touch, and also the most important aspect; his discipline on and off the pitch, in order to become a good player," explained Nazliazmi.
