Malaysia forward Mohamadou Sumareh is still a doubt for their 2018 AFF Championship Group A match against Vietnam on Friday, said head coach Tan Cheng Hoe in the pre-match press conference.

The Gambian-born player had injured his hamstring in training before their match against Laos last Monday, and missed the home encounter, which ended in a 3-1 win to the Harimau Malaya.

"Sumareh is doing better, but of course we now still have more than 24 hours to assess his condition.

"It will be good for the team if he can play, but we still need to follow the team doctor's advice; whether he's ready for tomorrow's match," said the former Kedah boss.

Commenting on their Friday opponents, Tan remarked that it is important for his side to show more improvements against the tournament favourites.

"It's going to be a tought match with Vietnam getting the home crowd backing, and they also did not play in the previous matchday, so they now have extra rest.

"The boys have done well so far to collect the maximum three points. But I want them to play better against Vietnam if we want to get a positive result.

"I have confidence in them, as they have kept improving. Tomorrow they need to step up, be focussed and disciplined," he noted.

Malaysia's match against Vietnam will be on November 16, Friday, at 7.30 pm Malaysian time.
