Kaizer Chiefs head coach Ernst Middendorp has confirmed that Itumeleng Khune will be available for selection against SuperSport United later this month.

The Amakhosi medical team has been working around the clock to get Khune fit after almost eight months out of action.

According to Middendorp, the 32-year-old has featured in several friendly matches for Amakhosi as he steps up his return to full fitness.

"We’ll have Khune next week and that is the next step," Middendorp told the media.

"He played 45 minutes in an earlier friendly match. We played him 60 minutes in another. He will play 90 minutes next week (in another friendly) then he’ll be available for selection."

The 60-year-old manager also explained Khama Billiat's absence, saying the Zimbabwean talisman has been carrying a knock since Afcon 2019.

Billiat hasn't featured in any of Chiefs' two league games this season, but Middendorp expects him to be back in the near future.

"Khama came back from the Afcon and there was an issue with his left knee. He came back on 15 July, stayed for four days without training. Then we travelled to Botswana but he did not go with us," concluded Middendorp.

"Immediately after the game against Orlando Pirates [in the CBL Cup], we were told that he had a problem with his knee ligaments.

"We were warned to be careful about it. Our next league game is on the 24 August and then he’ll be available for selection."
