The struggling Porcupine Warriors could not start their anticipated revival on Sunday, but the Phobians and the Academy Boys were unstoppable

While Asante Kotoko and Aduana Stars stumbled, there were victories for in-form Wafa and resurgent Hearts of Oak as the Ghana Premier League hit the mid-week line this weekend.

Leaders Wafa ended the first round on a high with a 2-0 home win over Inter Allies in Saturday’s only fixture, courtesy of a Prince Obeng Ampem’s double.

The Academy Boys’ triumph effectively takes them two points above second-placed Aduana Stars, who were held to a 1-1 draw by fifth-positioned Bechem United on Sunday. Eric Owusu put the Hunters in front on 31 minutes before Zakaria Mumuni restored parity for Aduana after recess.

Hearts of Oak, however, consolidated their hold on the third spot with a 3-0 thrashing of Liberty Professionals away at the Carl Reindorf Park. Captain Thomas Abbey scored twice to take his season tally to seven, while Cosmos Dauda fetched the other goal as the Phobians made it six league games undefeated.

Fourth-placed Berekum Chelsea also dropped points on matchday 15 as they were held to a goalless draw by struggling Great Olympics, who currently sit third from bottom on the log.

Most successful team in the history of the Premier League Asante Kotoko are without a win in their last 10 games in all competitions, involving eight matches in the topflight, following their scoreless draw with new boys Tema Youth at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi.

The Porcupine Warriors sit seventh on the table, a place above Medeama, who picked a 2-1 away victory over Bolga All Stars. Latif Salifu and Bernard Ofori were on target for the Yellow and Mauves while Ibrahim Giyas got All Stars’ consolation.

Elsewhere, Ebusua Dwarfs could not take their win tally to six in the topflight due to a 1-0 defeat to newly-promoted Elmina Sharks. Joseph Dabitora scored the only goal.

It has not been the strong defence expected of reigning champions Wa All Stars. The Northern Blues, ninth of the table, slumped to a 1-0 defeat at Ashanti Gold. Mumuni Shafiu was the hero at the Obuasi Len Clay Stadium.
