Man City star Mendy chased by stewards as he invades pitch to celebrate Liverpool win

Benjamin Mendy was chased by two stewards as he ran onto the pitch to celebrate Manchester City's win over Liverpool on Thursday night.

The injured left-back, wearing a bright orange jacket and white jeans, was presumably mistaken for a supporter as he darted from the tunnel area to congratulate his team-mates at the full-time whistle.

A video posted on Twitter shows Mendy racing towards Sergio Aguero, who scored the opening goal of the game in the huge title race clash at the Etihad Stadium, to celebrate with the Argentine, with the stewards following behind.

And he had reason to be delighted with the result, with City claiming a 2-1 win that brings them to within four points of Liverpool at the top of the Premier League table.

Jurgen Klopp's Reds had started the game well and looked certain to take the lead when John Stones's attempted clearance smashed directly off Ederson and looped towards goal.

He somehow managed to chase back and clear the ball to safety, however, with goal-line technology ruling that the ball was a matter of millimetres from crossing the line.

City would eventually lead through Aguero and then, despite Roberto Firmino pulling one back, grab what proved to be the winner in the second half courtesy of Leroy Sane's impressive low finish.

Pep Guardiola's side are now second place in the table, four behind Liverpool, with the Spaniard admitting after the match that the title could well have been over had his side not picked up the win.

And Mendy clearly couldn't contain his excitement as Anthony Taylor blew for full-time, running towards Aguero and giving him a kiss on the cheek.

The Frenchman, who is currently sidelined with a knee injury, reacted to the video on social media, writing: "bro was about to tackle me!"

Next up for City is Sunday's FA Cup third-round tie against Rotheram before they face Burton Albion in the Carabao Cup semi-final on January 9.
