Bojan Hodak's Malaysia U18 opened their 2017 AFF U-18 Youth Championship campaign with a 4-1 win over Laos U18, in their first Group A match.
In the match that was held at the Aung San Stadium on Monday, Hadi Fayyadh Abdul Razak (28', 90+1') and rising star Akhyar Rashid (45', 60') each scored a brace, while their opponents' consolation goal came in the 43rd minute, a freekick goal by Bounphachan Bounkong.
In the other Group A matches, Thailand downed Timor-Leste 3-0 while Singapore laboured to overcome Cambodia 5-3.
The three matchday one winners are now tied on three points at the top, but Malaysia are first, Thailand are second while Singapore are third due to goal counts.
On matchday two on Wednesday, Malaysia will face Causeway rivals Singapore, Cambodia will play Timor-Leste while Laos will take on Thailand.
Matchday one of the other group of the competition; Group B will take place on Tuesday, with Philippines facing Brunei and Indonesia taking on hosts Myanmar.
Despite our earlier report saying that New Zealand would be participating in Group B as an invitational team, it has emerged that the Oceanian side have withdrawn from the competition.
