Maiden Austria call-up for Ghana target leaves Black Stars brooding

Danso has been invited by Austria for an upcoming World Cup qualifier, leaving the Black Stars on the brink of losing out on their target

Austria have handed a first senior call-up to Ghana target Kevin Danso, almost crushing the West Africans' hopes of luring the 18-year-old away.

The news comes a few weeks after the Ghana Football Association revealed ongoing overtures to secure the services of some foreign-born players of Ghanaian descent.

Danso, a towering centre-back on the books of German outfit Augsburg, is one of two new men in Austria's 23-man squad for the 2018 World Cup qualifier against Ireland on June 11.

The youngster, who only made his Bundesliga debut in March, has apparently been rewarded for his impressive showing in the German top division.

The defender made seven Bundesliga appearances - all starts - as the Fuggerstadter won a hard-fought relegation fight on the final day.

Danso has made 21 outings for Austria at various youth levels, having played for the U-15, 16, 17, 18 and 19s.

Born to Ghanaian parents in Austria, Danso grew up in England, where he played for Milton Keynes Dons before joining Augsburg in 2014.

He remains eligible to represent any of the three countries at senior stage, pending a senior - and admittedly now imminent - appearance for Austria.

Danso was one of the players recently linked to Ghana in the wake of the recent plans to pursue foreign-born players for a switch of international allegiance.

Black Stars coach Kwesi Appiah has revealed ambitions to lure Spain youth forward Inaki Williams, Netherlands-born Timothy Fosu Mensah and Germany under-21 star Gideon Jung into his fold.

The GFA has already made contact with Italy youth defender Claud Adjapong, while Netherlands under-21 ace Derrick Luckassen is also under close monitoring.
