Kenyan Premier League have turned down a request from Football Kenya Federation to postpone Saturday’s derby between AFC Leopards and Gor Mahia.

FKF had written to KPL requesting that the derby is shelved so as to allow AFC Leopards and Gor Mahia players turn out for the national team Harambee Stars in friendly matches against Swaziland and Equatorial Guinea.

But in a swift rejoinder, KPL CEO Jack Oguda has revealed to Goal that they will not postpone the derby since they have a tight schedule plus congested fixtures.

“It is true we received a letter from FKF requesting that we postpone the derby but we have written back saying it won’t be possible. We have a congested fixture and remember the friendly for Kenya is not falling under the Fifa calendar.

“It will be difficult for us to call off the match as this was planned in advance and also our schedule is tight with Caf demanding that we finish the top league by October. We request that FKF uses other players for national team since this are just friendly matches.

“There are several players in town now who can play for Harambee Stars in the friendly matches, some are back home after their leagues concluded and some are unattached. I think those players can easily make the team for the two matches.”

Gor Mahia players in Harambee Stars squad include keeper Boniface Oluoch, Haron Shakava, Philemon Otieno, Joash Onyango, Humphrey Mieno, George Odhiambo and Francis Kahata while AFC Leopards have produced Michael Kibwage, Duncan Otieno, Whyvonne Isuza, Marvin Omondi, Dennis Sikhayi and Jafari Owiti.

Stars will then travel to India to take part in the 2018 Hero Intercontinental Cup, a Four Nations tournament set to be held at the Mumbai Football Arena.
