The green and gold have found an unlikely supporter in the Red Devils boss

When Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho selected Australia to finish second in their group at the World Cup, the bold prediction quickly went viral.

Drawn alongside Denmark, France and Peru, expectations are quite low for the Socceroos but the Red Devils boss isn't alone in his belief the green and gold can escape a difficult Group C.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Australian skipper Mile Jedinak responded to Mourinho's prediction by declaring the Socceroos share his belief.

"It's a compliment to the group but more importantly it's what we believe in and how we work on things," Jedinak said.

"We're all focused on doing the right thing on a daily basis.

"Do we wish France was tomorrow? Probably not. It's nice to get another hit-out together, with the way we've been working, beforehand.

"This period has been vital for us. Everyone has been very focused and determined."

The Socceroos finish off their World Cup preparation with a friendly against Hungary before kicking off Group C against France on June 16 in Kazan.

Australia claimed their first win under Bert van Marwijk in a recent 4-0 win over Czech Republic with the Socceroos rising four places in the world rankings as a result.
