A touching tribute from the Aussie attacker

Awer Mabil scored his first goal since the tragic death of his sister in January with the Socceroos attacker revealing a shirt in tribute to her.

After nearly five months without finding the back of the net, Mabil converted a penalty in FC Midtjylland's 4-0 win over Kobenhavn on Monday.

Having lost his sister in a car crash earlier in the year, the Aussie proudly showed off a shirt in her honour with the words: "Thank you for having our backs, love you always little sister."

Speaking after the match, Mabil admitted how important the goal was following such a difficult period.

"It meant a lot. It was the first goal after what happened to my sister," Mabil told Eurosport

"I've been so unlucky in the past couple games, I could have six or seven goals already.

"It was everything. I've been trying to stay strong for my family the whole time and when I get on the field I want to stay strong. This is going to give me even more strength.

"Today was so important to get that goal and to forget about what happened and now is the time to get back on track.

"To get that goal out of my system I can now go on and do my thing."

Mabil will be hoping to do just that in Midtjylland's next match when they face off against Brondby in the Danish Cup final.
