ISL 2017-18: Steve Coppell praises Jamshedpur's mentality

Jamshedpur FC head coach Steve Coppell praised his team's mentality after they registered a 1-0 win over NorthEast United on Saturday.

Wellington Priori's sensational overhead kick sealed three points for Coppell's side and helped them to third in the Indian Super League (ISL) standings.

"It was a good result. We didn't play as we would have liked to. I have respect for NorthEast United. Since Avram Grant took over, they are playing really well. They have good players.

"We had to work hard to survive in the first half. Our mentality in the second half was good and it was a great individual goal. I think that's why we won - because of our mentality," said Steve Coppell.

Coppell further went on to praise the league-best defence of Jamshedpur. "We were good (defensively), there were no defensive lapses.  In the first half, they didn't get clear-cut chances. They took shots at goal."

"Marcinho took a great shot which was saved by Subrata. Martin Diaz dictated proceedings in the midfield.  It was difficult in the first half and that's why we changed our game in the second half."

Jamshedpur have an away game to Chennaiyin up next followed by two home games to try and seal a berth in the semi-final.

"At this stage, it is better to play away games as the pressure is always on the home side. Before this game, we were a bit conscious. Statistically, in last 10 matches, seven teams won their away matches. Good for us that we are travelling to play Chennaiyin. Of course, they are a very good side," said Coppell, who also explained the absence of centre-back Anas Edathodika.

"Anas was there in our plans but picked up a hamstring strain two days back. He went through fitness test today morning but didn't pass. Not a big problem, hopefully, he will be fit before Chennaiyin game."

For the former Kerala Blasters coach, the focus is on winning the game against Chennaiyin FC. "I don't even think about it (playoffs) as it is so far away. I will just try and win next game against Chennaiyin."
