I-League: Mohun Bagan’s Sankar Lal Chakraborty takes a sly dig at East Bengal

Mohun Bagan picked up an important victory away from home as they downed league leaders NEROCA FC 3-2 and thus, scuppered their title challenge.

Coach Sankar Lal Chakraborty was elated with the win as they now trail arch rivals East Bengal only by two points. He also took a dig at the Red and Gold brigade by choosing not to mention among the elite teams in the league who play a good brand of football.

“Kinshuk (Debnath) came into the starting eleven after three matches and so he lacked confidence in the first half. As the game progressed, especially in the second half, our defensive organization improved and we did not concede any goal.

“According to me, after 15 matches, only three teams are playing good football -  Mohun Bagan, NEROCA and Minerva Punjab. Luck is a big factor. We would have been in a better position had luck favoured us,” he mentioned.

Chakraborty praised the performance of his players who ensured that they pick three points against an in-form team. The win means Bagan have now given themselves a chance to finish in the top three.

“Before the match, I had said that we have to play for the pride of this club and end the season in a good position. Players have done a good job. NEROCA also played very well. But ultimately we got three points,” he said.

“In a high voltage game, referees commit mistakes. He is also a human and can make mistakes. But I think he did well,” said Chakraborty on the referee’s performance.
