I-League 2018-19: Mohun Bagan rope in Egyptian playmaker Omar Elhusseiny

Mohun Bagan announced the arrival of Omar Elhusseiny as their fifth foreign signing for the upcoming I-League season on Tuesday.

The official statement from the Kolkata giants read, "We are pleased to announce that we have selected Mr. Omar Nabil Rashad Elhussieny an attacking midfield player from Eygpt after consultation with Head Coach Mr. Sankarlal Chakraborty as the fifth foreigner. 

"The player will come to Kolkata and shall undergo a complete medical and physical fitness test. During this time the Head Coach will observe him and after a successful conclusion of the tests, we will sign him.

"He has applied for his visa today and is suppose to receive the same by Thursday, October 11, 2018. The player is most likely to come to Kolkata by Saturday, October 13, 2018."


The 32-year-old comes from Maltese First Division club Żejtun Corinthians, for whom he scored twice and assisted four goals last season. The Giza-born's claim to fame came in the 2014-15 season while playing for  Levadia Tallinn.

The Estonian champions demolished San Marino side La Firoita 8-0 on aggregate in the first qualifying round, out of which one goal came from Elhusseiny's boots. 

Elhusseiny also has prior experience playing in Asia when he turned out for Persela Lamongan in the Indonesia Super League in 2015-16, scoring nine and creating a further 14 in just 19 appearances.

The twelfth edition of the I-League kicks off on 26 October with Bagan opening their campaign the next day away at Gokulam Kerala. The Mariners also confirmed the announcement of their sixth and final foreigner in the next few days.
