Rohit Ramesh-owned outfit Chennai City FC registered their first victory of the 2017-18 I-League campaign on Tuesday evening as they defeated hosts Churchill Brothers 2-0. Delighted by the full-time score-line, the visiting side’s coach V Soundararajan termed the victory as pleasing and commended his troops for operating as per the plot.
"Out of five matches, this is our first win and an impressive one, too. We played all our games very hard but we didn't get a result. Today, we implemented our plan well and got a result,’’ he expressed.
On being asked the reason for the team’s use of long-balls on Tuesday evening, the gaffer explained the strategy. "Initially, we observed that the goalkeeper’s (James Kithan) height is a bit less so we informed Soosai (Michael Soosairaj) to go for long-range attempts so that Junior (Jean-Michel Joachim) and Murilo (Almeida) can go for the rebound if any. Even though it was a failure in the first half, it was the long pass from Veniamin (Shumeiko) that helped Junior to score.’’
The Southerners’ manager believed that the opposition failed to live up to their expectations and mentioned that the Churchill Alemao-owned side displayed signs of fatigue. ‘’We expected a better show from Churchill Brothers going by the way they played against East Bengal but the signs of tiredness showed.’’
On the other hand, The Red Machines’ coach Alfred Fernandes claimed that the Goan outfit has picked up a bad habit of letting things loose in the latter half.
‘’When you make the same silly mistakes, the same thing is continuing-we are conceding in the added time. If it was 0-0 in the second half, it could have been a different story. When you concede a goal as silly as this, the morale of the players also goes down.
"Every time we try to rectify these mistakes and also tell the players to keep their focus while coming towards the fag end of normal time. It is a lapse in concentration which affects the whole team. When we concede silly goals like these, we come under more pressure," said the 51-year-old head coach.
Lastly, on being quizzed about the possibilities of recruiting new players, he answered, "We are looking out for that option and the management is working on that. We are also looking out for some local signings. Hopefully, 2018 can be a better year for us.’’
