Football Kenya Federation have approached the government with a Sh48m budget to help Harambee Starlets take part in Awcon finals.

FKF President Nick Mwendwa has told Goal that the amount will cater for the team’s new kit, two friendly matches and their participation in the competition to be held in Ghana from November 17.

“We have put in a budget of Sh48m to the government to help Starlets prepare adequately for Awcon finals. The money will help purchase a new kit for the team, organize two friendly matches and push them through the tournament but it is without bonuses, only allowances will be provided.”

Starlets have been pooled in a tough Group B alongside defending champions Nigeria, South Africa and Zambia. Kenya will open their campaign with a clash against Zambia on November 18, then face South Africa on November 21 before winding up their preliminary matches against Nigeria on November 24.

Mwendwa now says they are in the process of securing two build up matches against Uganda and Ghana. “Uganda duel is almost confirmed and we are also engaging Ghana. We want the team to prepare well and return good results.”

Kenya took part in the last edition held in Cameroon, where they, crashed out in preliminary stages. Nigeria, in particular, handed Kenya a 4-0 defeat, having lost the opener 3-1 to Ghana and another identical scoreline defeat by Mali.

Equatorial Guinea, who were champions in 2008 and 2012, will not play at this year's competition after being disqualified for fielding an ineligible player during their qualifying victory over Kenya.
