Crystal Palace’s Hodgson warns against Aaron Wan-Bissaka overhype

The Croydon-born right-back has put the right foot in since making his debut last season

Aaron Wan-Bissaka should be allowed ‘to continue to learn his trade’ and not be overhyped, according to Crystal Palace boss Roy Hodgson.

In the Eagles’ 2018-19 season-opener against Fulham, the 20-year-old right-back continued from where he stopped in his debut campaign.

He laid on Wilfried Zaha’s goal to cap off an impressive game at Craven Cottage. And Hodgson, noting that Wan-Bissaka can go on to become ‘a top right-back’, insists on allowing him to get better first.

"It's always nice when one of your players has a good game and captures the headlines as a result of it. So I'm very happy for him in that respect,” Hodgson told Sky Sports.

"But I still think it's better for us to be allowing him to continue to learn his trade, continue to prosper, without trying to raise him up on pedestals to then saw the legs off the pedestals when it suits."

"He was very good in pre-season, his opening game was excellent," he continued.

"We believe strongly in him as a coaching staff, we believe he's got all the qualities needed to become a top right-back.

"But it's one game, and it would be dangerous for us as coaches particularly to start saying that he's a wonder player after one performance.

"He had a very good game, but he's only played eight times in the Premier League and that's not enough games.

"We believe he will get better and better. We're delighted with him."

Wan-Bissaka’s next task is against Liverpool’s fearsome attack with the Reds set to visit Selhurst Park in Monday’s English Premier League tie.
